Eating Habits

Posted this in Behaviour /Development initially... thought I would try here as more appropriate..

DD is 16 months old, full time at nursery, and since April has been very funny about eating sandwiches. According to the nursery staff, she DOES eat sandwiches there with no fuss, and yet if I present a sandwich, regardless of contents, colour of bread, or shape cut, she just turns her head away and won't even entertain touching it. If i just put it on a plate or on her tray and walk away, she will pick it up and just drop it on the floor or put it onto the table.

I know I shouldn't get stressed about eating habits, but this is really starting to bother me and weekends are a nightmare trying to figure what to take out for her to eat - I have tried alternatives such as Pitta, wraps etc and just get the same response.

I know its not a big problem and probably just a phase, but just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced anything similar with eating habits at nursery appearing to be totally differnt. Any advice or suggestions to try and get her eating them would be appreciated.

Thanks
RHG

A combination of peer pressure and relaxed (not bothered) staff can mean children eat all kinds of things outside the home that they wouldn't do inside. Usually it means they come home wanting to eat something they had elsewhere rather than the other way around. Try not to let it bother you.

i guess maybe she just doesn't like sandwiches much?

sorry, that sounds flippant and i don';t mean it to be, but my youngest is similar... he just isn't that keen on them.
he'll sometimes eat bread, but not often.

I didn't eat bread till I was about 13, I think. Still not a big fan now, though I do eat it as lifes easier when you eat sandwhiches!

What about rice cakes? Or having cooked pasta and rice in the fridge and mixing stuff with this so she gets her carbs that way?

Best thing (though I'm behind you as my DS is only 10 months) is to not get het up about it, be as nonchalent as possible when your DD refuses and just offer something else. Like you said she's eating them at nursery so it's probably just a phase she;ll grow out of, or really doesn't actually like them. Getting worked up (not saying that you are though) would only make a big deal out of it.

And may I add the advice I give is what I hope to be following in a years time....!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I am just baffled/bemused by being told by nursery she is eating bread / sandwiches when they get such a negative response from me.

She does like rice cakes, and I think I might try the pasta / rice idea too as this is fine to take out at the weekends cold..

Thanks again.

PS forgot to mention, she eats toasted bread no problem :-0!

If she eats toast (I assume with something on it), would she eat an open faced sandwich, just a slice of bread or crackers with cheese/hummus/ham/cucumber/tuna mayo/coleslaw? Wink

tried that too and it didn't work.. [Sad]
