Hi, has any one tried a Dairy diet, it's supposed to be good for Muffin tops.

I'm a bit dubious, but as I'm a bit of a diet virgin, I wasn't sure what one to do. I am particularly wanting to get rid of the excess flab around my middle, as hate my flab over flowing my jeans. Apparantly that's called a Muffin top, so just googled it. It came up with a Monica Grenfell diet, which was featured in Women's own.
As far as I can understand it, there are various studies that suggest that Calcium rich diets, and dairy rich diets can help you loose certain types of fat.Especially the fat around your organs around your middle, because of the way it's stored. But I did read some where, that most of these studies were sponsored by Dairy companies Grin
In any case it's only for a week, it is a low carb diet from the looks of it, with portions of natural yog and creme fraiche alongside veg/fruit, so I think it's unlikely to do any harm.
As any one tried something like this before?

If you're serious about losing a few spare lbs and toning up wobbly parts then don't touch any diet that mentions either a name or a foodstuff... :) The 'Dairy Diet' is going to be another fad low-carb diet.

The simple way to lose weight is to use up a little more energy each day than you take in. Means doing the following

  • Reducing portion sizes, especially of energy-dense foods.
  • Taking regular exercise

And to be in good health at the same time do the following

  • Eat mostly 'plants'... vegetables, salads, fruit, wholegrains and pulses
  • Get as good a variety of different foods as you have access to and that you can afford
  • Eat more home-prepared/home-cooked food and fewer ready-made foods which contain hidden salt, fat and sugar.
  • Drink plenty of plain fluids and cut out things like alcohol and fizzy drinks
  • Radically reduce the amount of sugar and simple starches in your diet.

If you still struggle to lose weight then monitor your calorie intake for a week or two.

Thanks Chil1234, I'm sure you are right in the long term, but I'm going away on the 21st and esp want to lose a few lbs before then. The diet that you describe pretty much describes what I already eat, I could probably cut down on amounts and cutting out alcohol would also probably help, but I feel if I don't try and proper diet that tells you exactly when and what to eat, I will never really make any significant changes iyswim

The trouble with a fad diet is that they only ever work short-term. You can probably put up with whatever rules are stipulated for a week or three but, after that, you will revert to your old eating pattern, regain the weight lost, usually adding a few more lbs into the bargain. It's known as 'dieting yourself fat'

If you want to lose a few lbs in a couple of weeks and sustain the loss afterwards there is a much easier way.

  • Give up alcohol, caffeinated & fizzy drinks (even diet ones) completely and drink 2 litres of water or herb teas a day
  • Eat 'meat-free' 50% of your meals
  • Snack on fruit rather than anything else
  • Cut salt right out of your diet i.e. no preserved (ham, bacon, cheese, pickles), canned or ready-made foods
  • Do 1/2 hour of exercise every day

Drinking more fluids, no alcohol and cutting salt out of your diet means you will drop any weight caused by fluid retention. In many people this can be 7lbs quite easily. Snacking on fruit and going semi-veggie means your calorie intake drops. And the 1/2 hour of exercise burns up more energy and also boosts your metabolism

Actually most fruit is pretty sugary. Apples are about the best if it has to be fruit.
And it's protein that makes you feel full for longer.

Everyone will have different ideas about this. If you want to do something short and sharp and get pounds off for your holiday then low carb would be a good way to do it in my experience.

Katisha, have you tried low carb diets then?I hadn't thought about the high sugar content of fruit.
Chil1234, I could think about cutting down on my meat, but I don't eat a lot any way, no ready meals either, but do eat smoked ham and cheese sometimes so could cut that out too.
I don't like fizzy drinks, so that's not a problem.
I agree that exercise is really important in any weight loss plan.

Yes I have. Got a couple of stone off after children by doing Atkins. And now some years later I am finding a lot of success with a more low fat type of Atkins in the Dukan Diet. There is a big thread on it in the Big Slim/Weightloss/Whatever section here and many of us are finding it highly effective,

It's not for life, it's designed to get the excess weight off, and to remodel how you eat afterwards so that it doesn't all pile back on. I like low carb as a way of eating - it works for me, and I like not feeling hungry.

You don't sound as if you have much to lose, or a predisposition to overeat so you could probably do Dukan or similar for a short period and find it got the pounds off.

I know many people are suspicious of low carb eating, and think it's "fad" but actually, if read up on properly, it makes a lot of sense.

Unfortunately for many people, losing weight is not as simple as eat less, move more.

Alouiseg · 08/08/2010 16:24

I like low carb, ultimately it works for me, I don't feel deprived and it's restaurant friendly.

I think over the long term I have about a stone I want to lose, but I'm really keen to start my weight loss by loosing some from round my middle where most of it has settled, as a) I've read that having fat there is the most dangerous, as it is settled round your internal organs, and b) as I said before I loathe the over hang I have when I'm wearing Jeans. I'm size 14 and would ultimately like to get back to at least 12.
Thanks for all your advice so far, I think I'm going to try this diet, I've bought all the food now, but I take on board what you are saying Chil1234, and will think about how to do it sensibly over the long term.

The only thing that worked with me was EXERCISE - fat burning exercise.

I never ate unhealthily anyway so I now eat virtually the same as before but do lots of exercise and I lost weight that way.

So many people think that just dieting will help but if they just do some daily fat burning exercises then the weight loss is quicker and you are toning up problem areas.

Good Luck

Pretty, I plan to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, I don't think I could manage any more than that.
