Calling all bakers, recommend me a food mixer

Hi,

I want to start baking as I have always longed to bake lovely things like my mum. She has offered to get me some bakeware for my birthday, but has also recommended that I buy a mixer.

Naturally I would love a beautiful Kitchenaid like hers, but dp and I are strapped for cash. So any ideas for reasonably priced food mixers, I'm willing to go up to £100 or so, can I get a decent one for that?

Thanks.

I would buy a second-hand Kenwood Chef. they go on for ever, and you can easily get spares for them. I bought one 4 years ago on ebay for £27.00, and though I have now graduated to a new Kenwood Major, the old mixer is still going strong with a friend. The old one was better made than the new, and I reckon will probably outlast it.

another vote for the kenwood chef
v expensive but last for years tho as molecule said ebay might be worth a look

I second the Kenwood Chef. My mum's is still going strong after nearly 40 years of almost daily use, so if you can get one second-hand you'll do really well out of it.

And get Nigella's How To Be A Domestic Goddess - there are so many brilliant cake recipes in there that you won't want to stop using your food mixer!

I've got a 30yr old Kenwood Chef that was my Mum's. I absolutely love it.

i got teh kitchen aid classic for 180 a few years ago. tbh i don't use it that often. victoria sponges and muffins are best done by hand, i do pastry in the food processor. it is good for dough, meringues and christmas cake!

Will go and have a look at the Kenwood Chef then, saw the classic one online for £153, I could save up for it. :)

I bake more than almost anyone I know in RL and I only use a hand-held whisker like this.

I dislike the extra washing-up involved in bigger gadgets, and it takes so little time to make a mixture up.

I also use a handheld mixer or my breadmaker.

I got a good price for the Kenwood Chef Titanium here the other day. I'm not sure of the price comparison on the other models, but on that one it was loads cheaper that other stores. Fab fab mixer.

I use a hand held mixer too and totally agree with the washing up thing. I bake all the time and that and a massive plastic bowl seems to cover everything!

Another vote for the Kenwood. It changed my life (I am not exaggerating.) I even have the sausage making attachment now. Call me obsessed!
