Name of double or whipping cream in France?

I seem to remember struggling to find cream which would whip in France last time we were there. Anyone know French name for "whippable" cream for making mousse etc? Thanks

Chantilly is whipped cream I think? Or creme fouettee with an accent over the first 'e' literally means whipped cream (but hopefully it doesn't mean someone whipped it with a proper leather whip!)Maybe that would explain what you mean? Embarrassingly enough I do actually have a degree in French but have not really spoken it since the early 90s when I was doing my degree, just never really bothered with it afetr doing the degree....good use of tax-payers' money and all that!

I think chantilly has additions such as sugar /vanilla and is the whipped rather than the unwhipped article, if you get my drift.

Oooh, Arrghelp, so I was sort of right with my creme fouettee according to your link. My memory of French is rubbish, after writing 'fouettee' I had a sudden thought that I meant 'alouette' which I realised afterwards meant 'owl' ....

The French don't tend to have double cream the same as we do in Britain Chantilly cream is not the same.

OMG proof once more that my French degree wasn't worth the paper it was written on!! I wouldn't have remembered 'hibou' in a month of Dimanches!!

Creme fleurette, sold in packs like small milk cartons, or there is some is white plastic bottles with a blue picture on it, or you can use creme fraiche really cold.

Also, on the shelves with the vanilla sugar etc they have little packs of sachets that you add to the cream before whipping. The sachet is pale yellow, and from memory it contains icing sugar, and probably cornflour to help it thicken.
