my ds is gluten and dairy free and yesterday and today is enjoying gluten free toast and dairy free marg for the first time for breakfast. The marg [Pure] is quite salty, tho no more than other margarines i suppose. Is this ok for him? Are there salt free dairy free margarines anywhere?

How old is he?

I think there's a soya margarine, but not sure about salt levels. DS often has just jam on his toast, or peanut butter (no peanut allergy).

Not much help, but my ds can have goats milk, so we give him goats milk butter.

Did you buy the bread from a supermarket? We used to, but have found that if you make it yourself it's a LOT nicer. We make massive loaves, and freeze slices. It's quite easy, and even though we've had to buy a breadmaker, it works out a lot cheaper than the bought stuff.

thanks laura - he's 11 months old. I agree, homemade bread must be so much nicer - i 've never made it - must read up!

ruty - avocado is an excellent source of 'good' fats and is yummy on toast.

Homemade bread is v.easy with a breadmaker. They usually come with a load of recipes, some of which are for gluten free flour.

Good point about the fats. I add olive oil to gluten free pasta and rice. I also make sure DS gets two portions of oily fish per week (usually tuna and rice and a trout pie).

I've also (though it pains me after many years on Slimming World) stopped removing all the fat from meat that I cook for him (e.g. I would normally buy super lean mince, and then rinse after frying to remove all fat, but have stopped rinsing) to ensure that he is getting fats that way.

Did he enjoy his toast? DS absolutely loves it, and when they are deprived of so many things, it is really nice to see them eating something 'normal'. It's also nice to be able to give them a quick and easy lunch if you're out and about.

he loved the toast! Couldn't eat it fast enough. He tolerates avocadoes highlander, i guess he has them twice a week. Might try it on toast tho! I am eating the gluten free bread too and i must say its not that great. And i can't get any organic either. He's tried salmon, which i will try again, but i'm worried about the bones, there is always one or two tiny ones even in fillets...

im sure the tiny amount of salt in it isnt going to hurt him...

in 4 weeks he can eat ANYTHING (pretty much) anyway

as long as you arnt adding salt to his food / veg etc, (which im sure your not!) and you obviously only consume a tiny amount of spread at a time anyway, he'll be fine
