Breakfast for a 14 month old

Hi I'm just hoping someone can give me some ideas. I have had real problems with eating disorders in the fairly recent past, and while most of that is behind me now, I still have trouble with breakfast, and I am afraid that I've become aware of how this is affecting my daughter. She wakes up and I still only give her a bottle of milk. From tomorrow, I really want to make the effort for us both to sit down and eat a proper breakfast. At the risk of sounding dense, what would a normal breakfast consist of? I guess I'm looking for ideas we can both have and share, so that means no bread or bananas for me, still a bit difficult to eat them. Any advice would be a great help, so thanks in advance!

ds has weetabix.

if it helps though, i rarely eat breakfast at the same time as him (and I detest weetabix!).

Good luck for tomorrow, littlelamb.

How about some cereal and some toast to start with and progress from there. My kids loved things like banana and yoghurt mashed together and then some toast. You could start by having some toast and cereal and I'm sure your dd will love to have what your having!

littlelamb · 23/08/2005 18:48

Thanks. She does snack on raisins and apricots at mid morning, but I suppose I will have to try some cereal tomorrow. I have oats, is it ok to just put milk with them. Should I warm it up? Sorry for stupid questions, but have never been much of a breakfast person!

i put a handful of porridge oats in a bowl, cover in milk and nuke for a minute in the microwave. stir, then do for another 40 secs or so (may or may not have to add more milk). while microwave is going i mash up some strawberries and bananas to mix in with the porridge (you could leave the bananas out of yours). means you dont need sugar and is a bit more interesting.

good luck btw

1 tbsp of Readybrek with a couple of ice-cubes (thawed obviously!) of apples/sultanas or pear.

Bozza · 24/08/2005 11:09

I have oats and milk microwaved for breakfast. Call it porridge. I have syrup on mine .

The standard breakfast for DS (4) and DD (15 months) is one weetabix with milk and raisins followed by a large yoghurt for DS and a small one for DD. DS is going through a phase of wanting porridge and raisins atm. DH has bran flakes.

you can give them things like cheerios, rice crispies etc but I think at your DD's age especially if self-feeding they do better with the porridge/readybrek/weetabix type cereals. Given your difficulties you could give yourself a very small portion to see how you go on.

Don't know how that happened.

madmarchhare · 24/08/2005 11:16

Any of the things mentioned here are good. My DS had stopped his milk by this time though so I made sure that his breakfast consisted of cereal as to get the cows milk down him.

You dont have to have the same thing as your DD, just the fact that you are sat with her having something should help promote a healthy attitude towards mealtimes.

Laura032004 · 24/08/2005 11:32

DS is 16m, and he has 3oz of porridge from the packet with 9oz of milk. I heat it up in a pan. I usually add fruit to it. If it's a hard fruit (pear or apple) I put it in with the porridge to soften up a bit, if it's soft (banana or kiwi), I add it at the end. At 14m he might only have had 2oz of porridge with 6oz of milk. He's bf, so has milk on waking, and then breakfast an hour or so later so he's hungry.

Other breakfasts he has are - yoghurt with banana and honey, scrambled eggs and toast, rice crispy type things with milk. He's got a gluten intolerance, or I'd give him Weetabix with warm milk as well.

I try and get lots of fruit in with DS's porridge, as then I know he's had most of his 5 portions for the day. I've also (and this is quite gross!) been known to put mashed veg in with it. He doesn't mind. I keep bags of frozen fruit and veg in the freezer in case I don't have any fresh, and these mash down well.

I think if you are having problems giving her breakfast I would do something that is really easier such as weetabix instead of worrying about heating up milk for porridge etc. Or mashed banana for yoghurt.

Gomez · 24/08/2005 11:54

Shreddies and a cup of milk.

Some fruit

Toast

Scrambled eggs

Whatever takes your and her fancy.

littlelamb · 24/08/2005 12:34

Thanks for all your help. I tried porridge this morning with banana in it, but she just wasn't interested, she wouldn't even try it! I will try again tomorrow though as it looked as if it would be easy for her to feed herself with, which is a BIG thing for her right now! Might try her with a yoghurt as well. She just wanted her milk. It seems cruel, but how is the best way to stop this and actualy get her to eat something? Would it be best just to give no milk at all? She only has about three ounces anyway, and that surely can't be enough for breakfast?

REALLY glad you're feeling better, littlelamb!

DS3 eats a ready made scotch pancake at brekkie with his prescribed formula. It's the only thing he will accept.

PeachyClair · 24/08/2005 12:43

Just a thought, but I used to give DS3 his breakfast milk on rising and his food an hour later, as otherwise would fill himself up on the milk and then refuse food

compo · 24/08/2005 12:45

that's what I do - 7oz of milk when he wakes up, breakfast an hour later.

koalabear · 24/08/2005 12:46

my 16 month old likes to share baked beans on toast with us

he also likes the Shreddies as we can soak them in milk and then he can pick them up in his fingers

recently when we were in the US we tried pancakes, and he thought they were fantastic!

koalabear · 24/08/2005 12:46

oh, and definitely timing - DS has milk at 7 am and breakfast between 8 and 8.30

Bozza · 24/08/2005 13:09

Yes we do the milk at 7, breakfast at 8 thing.

Seona1973 · 24/08/2005 13:48

I stopped giving a bottle at around this age and offered milk in a cup along with breakfast. DD sometimes has cereal - I think cereals like cheerios, shreddies, etc are easier to self feed than porridge, weetabix etc as these are very gloopy and slide off the spoon. At least with cherrios, etc they can pick them up with their fingers as well as using the spoon and that makes it more fun (if a bit messy). Other faves are croissants, tea cakes, toast, finger crumpets, etc.

p.s. I used to have the croissants, etc while dd had her cereal but now she pinches them off me so I just had to end up giving her them from the start so that I had some of my own breakfast left!!

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 13:57

rice cakes
rice crispies
what do you need to avoid?

Bozza · 24/08/2005 14:00

Oh yes DD has her milk in a lidded cup and gulps it down (6-7 oz) in about 10 seconds. I've never tried DD with the cheerio type cereals but know that DS did better with porridge/weetabix. Might be a case of experimenting.

mumtosomeone · 24/08/2005 14:02

ds has milk. toast. weetabix readybrek.puffed wheat..followd by!!!!!!!!11
