Tried making them out of necessity - we are eating our store cupboard up and on a 'essentials shop' only for a few weeks while we do that.

Can't believe how easy they are and how much tastier. Shant be buying them again!

ooh recipe puhlease

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/07/2010 12:52

8oz of plain flour, tsp salt and baking powder, rub 2 oz lard in (or veg fat) and 1/4pt warm water. knead lightly.

leave for 10 mins in the fridge. Then heat a large frying pan til hot.

divide dough into 12 balls. roll out on floured surface as far as you can - it goes further than you think!

dry fry one at a time, flipping over as soon as you start to get bubbles forming in the dough - should be still soft with brown spots. when other side is spotty its ready.

They stack up on top of each other without needing paper towels or anything. I'm going to reheat mine briefly in the microwave this evening and have left them under a tea towel for now.

Yes home made ones are way better. But i don't put fat or baking powder in...just flour, salt and water. And seriously, they are so great like that i can't think that they'd need owt else!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/07/2010 22:16

ohyoubabbadkitten, thanks for this. Will try these tomorrow ,cheaper than a loaf of bread!

roastedfox · 24/07/2010 17:09

moonfacemama how much flour and water do you use?

MoonFaceMama · 24/07/2010 19:04

roastedfox just enough to make a soft, not sticky dough. I don't normally measure sorry. But i think i'll be making some tomorrow so can weigh it and let you know.

roastedfox · 25/07/2010 16:32

omnishambles · 25/07/2010 16:35

Could you use butter or oil instead of fat?

Yes it is odd - I try not to think about it too much - especially as said measuring cup has liquid measurements on it as well

omnishambles · 25/07/2010 18:04

Have just had a look and it says that one cup is 8oz which would have been bloody useful for the recipe above - as it is I asked dh to work it out to grams and we ended up completely wrong

ilovemydogandMrObama · 25/07/2010 18:04

My grandmother used to make tortillas every day (corn and flour) and felt liberated when she was able to buy them

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/07/2010 18:09
