Breakfast Cereals, any suggestions?

DD is 11 months and has weetabix for her breakfast but I am wanting to move her on to something a little more textured and exciting!

I have tried some baby cereals but they all seem very mushy and smooth, has any one got any suggestions?

Thanks!

At 11 months I think she is probably old enough for most cereals. Have you tried bite-sized shredded wheat? My DS loved them when he was a baby.

Are you wanting to stay away from cereals containing sugar? There isn't a huge array, of sugar-free cereal, unfortunately, unless you count the mushy stuff like Ready Brek and porridge. I let my kids have cheerios, rice crispies and shreddies now and then (all contain sugar).

Was hoping to stay away from sugar as much as possible, do like the shredded wheat suggestion

Thanks!

How about scrambled eggs and toast fingers? Or liven up some proper porridge (made with rolled/steel cut oats) with some blueberries or chunks of banana? Baked beans are lovely for breakfast too.

Rice Krispies, corn flakes,

Kallo organic whole grain puffed rice with milk.
You can then add banana or other squishy fruit/puree. (for the toddler required sugar rush in our case!)

Was going to suggest porridge also. You can make it as textured as you like depending on how much milk you add and how long you cook it for. I add stewed apple, sultanas and cinnamon for sweetness without sugar.

Thanks so much everyone!

As a first time mum I'm finding it hard to decide when baby specific products such as baby cereals etc should be used and when grown up stuff is ok.

Thanks again

Shreddies. Crunchy bran.

oopsandbabycoconuts · 28/07/2010 20:16

DD loves mini weetabix - just plain ones and also mini oatibix.

MrsBadger · 28/07/2010 20:16

mini shredded wheat is very good
no added crap either

dd is 2 now and has Shreddies, aforementioned mini wheats or Quaker oat crisp aka 'oaty pillows' but nothing sugarier.

FloraFinching · 28/07/2010 20:19

my DD really likes all-bran, to which we add some dried fruit. I'm less bothered, but started getting it for medicinal reasons, and DD is now hooked.

Habbibu · 28/07/2010 20:23

rude health oat or rice crispies; porridge, mini wheats.

I never really used special baby stuff - it's a con, just more expensive versions of the normal stuff! Get a packet of baby cereal and take it to the cereal aisle to compare the different levels of salt and sugar etc per 100g to see which are suitable if you are worried.

I found Raisin Wheats/Apricot Wheats/Blueberry Wheats etc to be fantastic. Softened in milk for breakfast (then put them on the highchair tray whole for them to eat with fingers - the squishing part is the most fun!) and dry for out and about snacks.

The own brand corn flake, cheerio type things etc tend to have less sugar/salt than the main brands. DS is happy with own brand cornflakes even though I don't like them much myself.

My son has had ordinary porridge from 7 months with some yoghurt (plain) and or banana in it. He loves it and it is so good for him.

janajos · 28/07/2010 20:51

btw it is so easy to prepare, just read the instructions for microwaving, it takes about 4mins while I put the coffee machine on and then we are both happy.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions and sorry I've not replied earlier have been at work so not had time to go on MN.

Where can I buy rude health products? DD seems to like the shredded wheat
