slow cooker question - help!

I'm cooking lamb shanks in the slow cooker; at the moment they are not covered by liquid as I don't want there to be too much sauce - but will they cook OK if I leave them like that? Or do I really need to add more stock so that they are covered?

Thanks!

I guess all the slow cooker owners are out, living the sort of life you can live when you have a slow cooker.

I was hoping to catch up on sleep while 3wo sleeps, except now I'm worrying about whether food will be edible or not. Looks like I'll have to sleep and chance it...

I think you have to cover them, then when you are ready to eat them take a bit of the liquid out and reduce it by boiling up in a pan perhaps?

I've seen recipes for whole chickens in the slow cooker - and that wasn't full of liquid, just a bit 1/4-1/3 way up. I guess the lid is tight and the steam heats it up anyway. But not 100% sure. I'm sure it'll be fiiiineeee! Hope you enjoy you ZZzzzzzz's (and lamb shanks later)!

Should be fine, steam stays in slow cooker

Thanks for the replies! Sorry didn't get a chance to post before now, but it worked fine

I do whole chickens with no liquid at all apart from a squeeze of lemon, and they are fine. I just checked my slow cooker recipe book and it does lamb shanks in a tin of tomatoes and a cup of white wine, so they must do in the steam as the chicken does.

thereistheball - that Lamb Shanks recipe sounds like the recipe I used yesterday (done without wine though) - was yummy! Which is the recipe book that you use?

No you don't need to cover them I usually just chuck a tin of tomatoes in with them and leave it. I look my lamb shoulder in there with hardly any liquid at all all comes out bloody lovely! Plus I us my slow cooker all year round for everything....I love it!

This one. I'd say it's pretty good. Am going to try the veal olives in there next week for guests.
