breakfast ideas for toddler

exactly what it says on the tin, really. DD is 18 months old, and not a big fan of breakfast. She has juice, usually half a banana and then picks at some weetabix with milk. Sometimes she'll eat a bit of my muesli - but wondering if I can find her a bit of variety without going down the sugary cereal route. She's not fussy although (bizarrely for a toddler) doesn't like yogurt. She usually has a decent snack later in the morning, so maybe she just isn't a breakfast person?

Was thinking about bran muffins, or something similar - i.e. entice her into a breakfast habit?

Toast? With different toppings? Not just jam, maybe marmite, or cheese-on-toast?
DD (19 months) loves eggy bread, which she has for a treat sometimes.
She also likes hoops (cheerio type cereal) I don't buy the nestle ones but the supermarket ones seem to have less sugar on them anyway.
Rice crispies are a bit messier but she likes those too.
You could mix up some cereal in yoghurt maybe?

Bran muffins are nice but quite a lot of work for you on a regular basis, surely?

Maybe she's not that hungry really, half a banana might be enough for her.

Have you tried other types of cereal e.g. rice pops, cornflakes, mini-weetabix? My DC like a change every now and again. What about trying it with hot milk or offering porridge, maybe with some apple puree mixed in?

What else can I suggest ...

  • scrambled eggs
  • tinned fruit e.g. mine like tinned pears and peaches and pineapple which is nice and easy
  • rice pudding - that might be a bit sugary though?
  • bread and cheese

My DD's ultimate favourites are Ready Brek and banana and GugCup - hardboiled egg and bread & butter mixed up in Dad's coffee mug moistened with milk.

If she is eating well the rest of the say, I wouldn't worry.

Muffins are OK but still quite sugary. How about boiled eggs - if your DD can't manage a spoon, you can mash on toast or just give her a warm one whole to eat?

I tend to be guided by my 20mo DS - which was why he had corn on the cob for breakfast on Saturday.

rest of the day. Oops

Toast is the obvious! Either just with butter or with jam, soft cheese, peanut butter for variety. You could also give beans or scrambled egg with it if she was really hungry.

My DS's standard breakfast is a Weetabix followed by toast - he will always go for a bit of toast. Agree with duplogoto that muffins, if you're making them yourself, sound like a lot of work - though my DS will also always eat muffins, either sweet or savoury. But toast is easy!

chiccadee rofl at the corn on the cob!

I'd not worry too much. My DD eats a good breakfast but then only picks at her lunch. I think different babies are hungry at different times.

DD has cereal (at the moment it's shreddies), and some fruit and a cup of milk.

Rhian82 · 15/07/2010 11:56

Plain porridge with some of the banana mixed in? Or toast definitely - my DS adores it.

BooKangaWonders · 15/07/2010 14:11

What about mini weetabix? Mine like eating them without milk. (and most cereals, come to think of it!).

I try to steer mine towards eggs/ baked beans/ cheese/ other protein to set them up for the day, but they are very much breakfasty dc, like me. Dh on the other hand doesn't do breakfast before about 10am. Maybe your toddler is like that? so a brunch might suit better.

drivingmisscrazy · 15/07/2010 19:22

yes, she's usually ok with a bit of 'toe' as she calls it and likes a snack around 10 - I think she is just not an early bird really...

I think I wanted the muffins have some good recipes that look at least quasi healthy

You could always make a big batch of muffins from time to time, maybe mini ones, and pop them in the freezer?

(That thought came to me in the shower this morning, how sad am I?!)
