Whoamireally · 13/07/2010 14:16

Having a BBQ in a couple of week's time, but wanted it to be more akin to a dinner party just BBQ style so no sausages or burgers, especially after a whole summer of them.....

Any ideas welcome please!! Want something a bit different ideally..

We have just had a fishy one. did scallops, salmon/monkfish/onion kebabs, lobster, recently we did marinated chicken breasts, you could also gte a butterflied shoulder/leg lamb and marinate it, whole beef fillet. whole salmon.

ReasonableDoubt · 13/07/2010 14:25

Fish/seafood is easy and impressive.

There are loads of recipes here. I have done the prawn skewers, blackened fish, cajun salmon and the sea bass with herbs and all were very nice.

Skewers/kebabs are so easy and look impressive - use prawns, scallops or 'meaty' fish like monk fish.

I thought these spatchcock poussin looked nice, although maybe fiddly to eat?

If you want to spend money, you cannot beat a fillet steak on the bbq. Simple but delish.

have you ever tried Jerk chicken on the bbq? Lovely. I do a 'Caribbean' themed bbq sometimes and it goes down a treat.

Rollmops · 13/07/2010 15:54

Fish in a Box is a delivery service that does lovely seafood, have a look for ideas.
Butterflied leg of lamb is fab on BBQ; so is suckling piglet

Whoamireally · 13/07/2010 17:49

Mmmmmm yummy I do like the seafood idea, but is it easy to totally ruin it on the bbq? (we have a gas one). I really like the Loch Fyne prawn skewers if any of you have ahd those.

Liking the sound of jerk chicken, what do you marinade it in reasonabledoubt?

Where can you buy butterflied lamb rollmops? And do you put anything on it? I am thinking that maybe if I do a couple of 'flavoured' things then people might just want something plain anyway? Not everyone likes their food mucked about with.

Any veggies got any ideas - I have tons of baby courgettes in the garden and by then will possibly have some corn on the cob?

Other thing is, what do have with it? Does anyone have any poshish salad ideas? Am planning to do a rocket and parmesan type green salad, but probably need something carby to go with it, do you reckon?

Marinate chicken breast cubes in paprika, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and yoghurt (lots and lots of garlic is key). Then skewer it onto skewers.

Serve with nice salad, real pita bread (arabic stylee, not supermarket stylee) and mini roast potatoes.

Also do kofta kebabas with mince meat mixed with chopped onion, garlic and lots of chopped coriander and parsley.

Serve with yoghurt and cucumber sauce and a nice tahini and lemon juice sauce, with salad etc.

I never bother doing burgers and hot dogs/sausages on a bbq, there are so many nicer things one cn do.

overmydeadbody · 13/07/2010 17:54

Not sure what yuou mean by 'posh'? Do you just mean 'nice'?

tethersend · 13/07/2010 17:56

Sweet potato and halloumi kebabs. Yum.

overmydeadbody · 13/07/2010 17:56

You can do vegetable kebabs with the baby squash (whole) and shallots on skewers with lots of olive oil and garlic.

overmydeadbody · 13/07/2010 17:58

oooh yes add haloumi to the vegetable kebabs.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/07/2010 18:03

Couscous with roasted vegetables (you can use your courgettes) asparagus and green bean salad, greek salad.

Whoamireally · 13/07/2010 18:12

Mmmmm halloumi, why didn't I think of that? Halloumi goes with courgette doesn't it? Sweet potato sounds lovely..

By 'posh' I mean, imagine if you were having a smartish dinner party but only had a barbecue to cook it on.

I do really like the whole middle eastern idea omdb - not sure where I could source real flatbreads in these parts. Will have a look into that,

My dad did a lovely one a while back. He set out lots of bowels of ingredients in bite-sized bits - really nice meat, chicken, shrimps, all sorts of veggies etc and we made our own skewers. It was fun, interactive and rather posh in a laid-back Martha Stewart kind of way...

highriggs · 13/07/2010 18:27

leg of lamb with the bone taken out, easy to do yourself just make sure knife really sharp, then marinade in a bag overnight with , lemon, rind and juice, bashed up rosemary, crushed garlic, thyme and olive oil.

Chicken cut into pieces and marinaded in
onion , garlic, soy sauce, lemon juice, oregano, tomato puree, red wine vineagar, chillies, some coriander, blend all the marinade stuff till smooth and then pour over chicken and leave overnight.

Pink pickled onions which look fantastic and are a great relish - slice red onions and soak in boiling water for ten minutes, drain and add orange and lime juice and chopped red chilli, serve cold.

Courgette , feta and tomato salad, - skin tomatoes, take out seeds and dice flesh. Put 1 shallot finely chopped into vinegar and olive oil to soften for ten minutes, slice courgettes very finely into rounds, then toss with tomatoes, feta, mint and the shallots.

A lot of these recipes are from the Thomasina Miers Mexican food book which we are using a lot at the moment and it is on offer at the book people at the moment for £7.99

Alouiseg · 13/07/2010 18:29

A large silverside of beef and a marinaded butterflied leg of lamb. Much nicer than little charred bits of meat

Batteryhuman · 13/07/2010 18:51

Hire a big paella pan and cook paella on the bbq

Wrap whole fish, eg salmon or seabass, in foil with herbs and a glug of white wine, and cook on bbq for 20 minutes or so. Serve with barbecued veg and couscous

Oblomov · 13/07/2010 20:04

Tenderloin of Pork. marinated in garlic, ginger, honey, 5 spice, hoisin, soy, oil. serve with iceberg lettuce leaves, cucumber, spring onions, and plum sauce - to make chinese spring roll, like you would duck.
Lovely. served it to our guests on sun. they loved it.

do minted new pots. boil new pots, add butter. mint sauce and a tiny bit of vinegar and sugar. lovely.

lurkingsnurker · 13/07/2010 20:18

Oh yes, butterflied leg of lamb is lovely on the BBQ. Marinate in lemon, garlic, rosemary & olive oil. I serve with couscous (with finely chopped chilli, red pepper, coriander, spring onions stirred in), tomato & feta salad, and green leaf salad. Beetroot is also lovely with this - you could do beetroot salad.

Strawberries and cream great for pud

bluecardi · 13/07/2010 20:20

but a bbq isn't complete without sausages - what about very posh sausages

taffetacatski · 13/07/2010 21:31

another vote for butterflied leg of lamb, marinated the night before.

raw courgette salad - use only wee ones - peel vertically so you get thin strips, dress with ex voo, lemon juice, a splash of ww vinegar and lots of black pepper

potato salad with chopped spring onions, tossed whilst still warm with ex voo, sherry vinegar, dill and salt and pepper

saganaki - two big packs of feta, 20 small cherry toms, 20 capers, 15 kalamata olives halved and stoned, few tbspn olive oil, 6 sprigs thyme, wrap all securely in foil and bbq 10-15 mins. dip in with carrot, celery or pitta/flatbread

overmydeadbody - where do you get arabic stylee pitta?

theyoungvisiter · 13/07/2010 21:35

oo yes, butterflied leg of lamb - we do this often and it's very nice, and can stand being pink in some bits for those who like it that way.

I also love scallops in the shell which are pricey but super quick and easy. I make a chilli and lime butter (as it sounds - just mash them together with perhaps a soupcon of garlic) and put a dollop in each shell, then sit the scallop on top. Then put the shell on a very hot bbq and wait until they sizzle. Turn the scallop if you can bear the heat. Only takes 30 secs or so, and makes a nice dramatic starter.

Rollmops · 13/07/2010 22:05

YOur local butcher does it for sure, also, many online meat box companies offer it as well; remember meatpacks.co.uk, or something like that, has a cheap delivery and do butterflied leg of lamb.

Whoamireally · 14/07/2010 16:50

Thanks for all the lovely ideas - I think we will try a marinated chicken and a sort of middle-eastern style butterflied leg of lamb with flatbread, and sort of middle easterny style salads with taffeta's courgette salad.... I am currently getting a bit carried away on a Turkish online supermarket site!

Halloumi with lemon and coriander dressing

2 packs of Halloumi, each sliced into 8 pieces

dressing:

3 tbsps olive oil
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp English mustard powder
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1 finely chopped clove of garlic
1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander

Mix all dressing ingredients together well

Grill cheese till lightly charred on each side (will not take long)

Put onto a flat dish and pour over dressing

Would serve 4 as a starter with flatbread

bunjies · 14/07/2010 17:17

Butterflied leg of lamb is the business. I marinade it overnight in a mixture of natural yoghurt, cumin, corainder and mint.

To continue the ME theme make a tabbouleh using cracked wheat, chopped coriander, parsley, mint, black olives, cherry tomaties and cucumber.

Minted new potatoes are yum.

Homemade coleslaw with cabbage, carrot, red onion and apple. Dressing made with mayo, splash of wine or rice wine vinegar, and let down with some milk.

God, I'm hungry now!

Whoamireally · 14/07/2010 22:37

God that halloumi starter looks gorgeous...

bunjies do you have to put it in the fridge? And do you toast the coriander and cumin?
