sugestions for a 7/8 month old

My ds is nealry 8 months and still doesn't like to eat lumps, I wasn't concerned about this as he will eat toast or lumpy banana but I had to take to a ped consultant the other day who went on and on that he must eat lumps, it will affect his speach etc etc.

Has anyone got any recipees suitable for a 8 month old and anymore suggestions on possible finger foods, I give him carrot and cucumber (which he only sucks) and cow and gate biscuits, plus toast.

Thanks

Spikeycat, I've never heard that before - sounds ridiculous to me. But hey, what do I know, just because I've never heard of it doesn't mean it isn't true. You don't see adults unable to cope with lumpy food though, so everyone does get the hang of it eventually - try not to worry.

minced chicken?

I thought it stupid too, considering how crap they were with him in hospital I am surprised I even listened to this man, who couldn't even be bothered to read through ds's notes before meeting us!

Dd2 (nearly 9 months) loves mini sandwiches (marmite or cream cheese), softly cooked carrots, cucumber, picking up bits of cooked apple (messy), soft bits of pasta, breadsticks and recently, chicken and apple balls (a la Annabel Karmel). She does brilliantly, especially as she only has the beginnings of one tooth.

Have you tried not pureeing his food so much, just pulse it and mash it so it isnt as smooth as a puree? If he eats jars, there is a big difference between the 4 month and 7 month jars, the change can be too much for most babies. Dd2 is very good with lumps but even she finds some of the lumpier jars too much and gags on it.

how about minced consultant.

Spikeycat, don't worry. My ds went through a short phase at a similar age of not liking pureed foods that had lumps in it, although like your ds he was happy to suck on toast or biscuits. (I think he was just such a pig that the lumps weren't going in fast enough.) Anyway, he is now 2.5 yrs and eats absolutely everything (garlic, fish eggs, olives etc.) and there is nothing wrong with his speech.

It sounds to me like the consultant is not using much common sense. It is probably not a good idea for an older child (ie 18mo+) to still only be eating purees, but it's a bit silly to start worrying about an 8 mo. old, especially if you are giving him "finger foods" like carrots and toast. They really can't do much more until they get teeth. (My ds didn't get his first until 11 mo.).

if it makes you feel any better spikeycat my ds is almost 10 months old and I still puree his food but he also eats little sandwiches, toast, cheese, fruit as snacks around the main meal. So he sounds just like your ds (but older!) I've only got a blender and ds just hates mushed food but I think because it is too dry (have you noticed that mushed carrots just aren't as liquidy as pureed ones for example)

Spikeycat - it also says about speech development in the bounty guide for weaning & health so your not going mad!
I was starting to worry about my dd as she's the same (7 and a bit months) but after reading this I feel reassured. I was going to ask about finger foods - my dd just isn't interested at all, but as she's not well at the mo I'll leave that one for another day!

well, yesrerday I gave him some marmite on toast, which I thought he had eaten, until I found some crushed in to the carpet, mmmmmm!

The only finger foods he seemed really intersted in was the vole (or shrew) that the cat bought in the other day and I found him playing with (don't know if any of you sat that thread!)

Hi My son is almost 8 months and he eats evrything I cooked, sometimes people say different and get confused. Is someone know how to cook pasta for around this age, I don't know any cooking. Very embarrassing.
