Small pond advice

I've just made a small pond using a galvanised water trough. It's 90 x 40 x 40 cm and has had plants and a small solar powered fountain in it for a couple of weeks now and it seems to be doing well.

I was wondering if I could pop a couple of fish in there? Or is it simply too small? Would it need a filter? Thanks in advance :)

You could put a couple of fish in there but, you would definitely need some filtration and more aeration to oxygenate the water. (A small fountain won't be enough) Remember, even fish tanks need these!
Looks nice though, with or without fish 😀

You get solar aerator as well. Some solar fountains have a small filter.

I think it’s too small really. That gives you a volume of 144 litres (according to Google) which is a medium-large fish tank size. Goldfish need a minimum of 200 litres.

If there’s any way of sinking it in the ground it would make a lovely wildlife pond and you’d definitely get frogs or newts. You would need to provide a way for animals which fall in to climb out though (eg by making a stone “stepladder” for them).

I'd say as well as being too small it's going to have big temperature variations that would up killing things off.

I'd says it's too small, fish will eat any invertebrate you get too.
Give it a while more and you'll have all sorts of interesting things living in there, it'll just be mossie larvae at the minute but diving beetles and dragonfly nymphs will arrive soon and they are ugly bugs but fascinating. You might want to think about a ramp or even a length of rope as frogs will manage to get in but won't be able to get out

Definitely thinking it is too small for fish.

@Tygertiger @Singleandproud I've already started building up some stones inside to create an exit. The plan is to build steps up the outside using bricks once I've managed to acquire enough.

Thanks all 😀
