Help DD won a goldfish

We are not in the UK at the moment!
We have got a 75l tank which seems enormous, a filter and food.
The poor thing is tiny (I'm assuming a baby) and in a tiny pot so we are just filling it up and adding the filter ASAP.
We are here for about 6 weeks but then have a possible family to take it.
What do we need imminently? Plants? Rocks? Help!

I think you should get it a friend

I would have just refused it. You don't have the set up and obviously didn't want a fish otherwise you would already have them?

We weren't there, she was at a club (she's 9). DH picked her up and there it was.

I read they don't always play nicely?

DH has been off doing research too and thinks the tank is too big and it does need a friend.

Maybe. But imagine it’s life without one. It already has nothing to do and nowhere to go

The tank isn't too big. Gold fish grow big and need a lot of space. They are better suited to larger outdoor ponds than tanks, because that will give them the volume of water they need. If you're planning to give it away in 6 weeks I'd look for someone with a pond.

WunWun · 28/07/2023 05:53

Why didn't you just find someone with a pond? I don't understand the point of keeping it if you're going to be there for such a short timr

Ponds aren't a thing here but we'll find someone who wants it.

Good point, we've found a shop with a friend for it so we will be getting one.

Well done on trying to do best by it. They grow really fast in their first two years of life and that 75 litre should be looking pretty small for it in a few months time! Presuming this is a long-bodied type Goldfish and not the short-bodied "Fancy" type, it will eventually be 10"-12" long excluding the tail, and ideally should hit that full size in 2-3 years time, and potentially live for 12-15 years or more.

Poor things are probably the most neglected pet on the planet :(

And you are right to wary of "friends", they do like companionship but this is better in groups as they can also pick on each other, and as above they get really big, so multiple really large fish who are getting feisty with each other = needs big space!
