Seeding a new filter from an old one

Just before lockdown our heater broke, and we lost a little shoal of rasbora before I could get a mail-order replacement, sadly.

The new heater is in, and today I decided to replace the old internal filter while the tank is fishless as the impeller is sticky. So I have the new filter running in tandem with the old one.

The tank currently houses a single cherry shrimp and a nerite snail who survived the heater breakdown, so I have still been feeding the tank and doing water changes.

I guess the cycle is unlikely to still be effective, so I am trying to work out how to salvage what beneficial bacteria I can from the existing filter.

So does this sound like the right plan:
Keep the filters running in tandem for a few weeks
Start water testing as though I was starting a new fish less cycle
Continue to (over) feed the tank with fish food and do weekly water changes?
