Dead assassin snails

I've got a 40 liter tank with 2 platys, 6 Danios, 2 ottos, 3 shrimp and four assassin snails. Just after water change two weeks ago I noticed a baby snail (yay!) and then noticed a dead adult (one of the shrimp was trying to get it out of its shell) and last night I saw that another one has died (shrimp was again trying to get it out of its shell).

I have no idea what could be killing them, is it lack of food? I originally put them in to eat rams horns but they've been gone for a few months now. They seem to spend more time at the top of the tank now, whereas before they were always on the bottom, no idea if that signifies anything? Don't want any more of them to die -what can I do?

Started setting up the tank and realized they hadn't included the light timer, so have paused whilst they try to find it in the warehouse, or get me a replacement. Then I can buy more plants and let it all run through for a week or so. When you say put the fish in gradually, do you mean adding additional fish or moving the ten I have? Can I move a few every couple of days? I was hoping to be able to move all the ones I have in and then getting some more a couple of weeks later. I was thinking of some neon tetras, maybe 9 or 10 so they can shoal, plus maybe 6 more shrimp.

You can move your current fish all in one go. I meant increasing your fish numbers...do it slowly. E.g. add 5 neons one week, then add another 5 the next week.

Ok thanks, will do

I have moved the fish over and they look very happy, the shrimp are especially liking the bog wood (so it was worth all the faff of repeatedly soaking it in boiling water all week). I'm going to wait until we get back from our howls before putting any more fish in so that gives the tank another month to settle in. Thanks for all the advice!

assassin snails feed on other snails,

Looks great!

If you want a bit of moss to grow on the wood PM me your address and I'll send you a few pieces if you like. Shrimp love moss to graze through.

Thanks TreeSparrow, That would be great, but how do you get the moss to stick to the logs?

tie it on with mono-filament thread such as fishing line and it will soon attach

TreeSparrow · 15/08/2015 14:12

You can tie it on with black cotton thread.
