We have a 70 litre tank with 2 oranda. One has had fungal growths on its eye, tail and body for at least 9 months. I honestly am surprised it has survived so long. The other fish is fine.In this time, I have tried 3 types of fungus/ fin rot treatments without success. I wash the filter with tank water and have removed the gravel as I wondered whether this was harbouring problems. Poor thing deserves to survive but really running out of ideas. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Have you got a water testing kit? Water parameters should give you a few clues. I would guess that the nitrAte is probably quite high, if not the ammonia and nitrIte as well.

The biggest problem you have is that orandas are very large, very messy fish and so they need tons of space. They don't all get this big (sit down before looking at the photo!), but they have the potential to.

For 2 orandas, I'd be looking at a tank around 190 litres at least, and a whacking great filter. Sorry if that comes as a bit of a shock.

Thanks Eau...No,I don't have a water testing kit....have done weekly water changes though. Wouldn't that do the trick? Alongside all the treatments?
Would consider larger tank if they made it that far....!

You'd probably have to do tons of extra water changes and even then there would be problems. A tank that's too small will slow down their growth and stunt it. This can cause problems, especially with fancy goldfish because of their shape- their organs are already all scrunched up.

I wish there was a way around it but they need more room :( If you haven't got the space for a big tank then there are lots of fish rehoming pages on Facebook.

The fish are still quite small....maybe about 5cm not including tail

Still babies then. The one in the link is 2 years old. They grow really fast.
