How can you tell if you are feeding your fish enough?

I have a little goldfish. He always seems to be looking for food but I'm cautious of over feeding. He seems to be healthy and growing.

If he has a good round shape and is still growing then you're doing fine. Fish are very greedy and will eat if you put food in front of them even if they dont need it (bit like me and cake Grin)

Thank you Mogz, he just lounges round the tank not moving much until someone approaches it and then he goes nuts looking for food.

He doesn't look thin so I think he's just greedy.

Goldfish are not the most energetic of fishies, do you know what type he is? The fancier they are the more chilled out I've found.

No, he's not in any way fancy, although his tail is growing lovely and long now, I am just amazed I've managed to keep him alive this long...

If he's not a fancy be prepared for him to get quite long, he might eventually need quite a big tank or a pond to live in.
Goldfish were the first fish I kept, I had one that moved house with me twice and was my bestest friend Grin my dad and I built a pond for her ... well, I mostly supervised and made tea. I've never been without fish since, although its tropicals I'm keeping at the moment.

Goldfish are like labradors, they are always hungry. You can teach him to feed from your hand if you want, I had some hoplos that did that and it was really cute (the congo tetras not so much, they had sharp teeth).

Someone gave me a great formula for feeding fish.

Take what you think you need. Put half back. Put half the remainder back. There.

A fish tummy is the size of their eye. Uneaten food will rot and cause water problems. Agree with the others who say to be aware of the size of your tank. Goldfish are BIG and need at least a 20 gal tank. Don't believe the myth that fish only grow to the size of the tank.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 29/11/2013 08:40

Thank you, that's really useful, especially the tip about the size of his eye.

We have a pond to put him in once he grows too big for the tank, at the moment it's plenty big enough.

If I sneak into the room and he doesn't see me he just floats behind his favourite rock. Once he sees me he goes bonkers with his "feed me" routine. I might see if I can get him to eat from my hand.

And people say fish are stupid! I raised some baby goldfish and they learned to beg for food by the time they were 10 days old.
