Our 100 L tank has just sprung an enormous leak - water everywhere. I have put the fish (one goldfish and six white mountain minnows) into a very small tank (45xm x 30 cm) and emptied the leaking tank. I will need to get some sealant, but am working until the weekend. Will the fish survive? I have kept two buckets full of the original water out of the tank; will I need it when it comes to refilling? The gravel at the bottom was just black (fish poo?). Should I wash it before refilling or keep it to keep the bacteria/ph/whatever as similar as possible?

Oh bugger :( The important thing is to keep the filter running, can you stick it in with the fish in the container they're in now or is it a built-in one?

They should be OK until the weekend but I would change the water every day to be on the safe side. Have you got enough dechlorinater to do extra water changes?

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 23/10/2013 06:40

No dechlorinator .... never used it; always used waterbutt water. The filter is built into the tank, so can't be moved. Should I change some of the water every day? Is there such a thing as fish-safe sealant or would any sealant do? Should I keep a couple of buckets of the old water for when they finally return?

There is a fish tank sealant. I would recommend using that. We get it from the local fish shop.

Obviously where they sell pet fish. No chips involvedGrin

Petsathome this afternoon then. Maybe a few chips too, now you mention them ...

Tank was fine, incidentally; a bit of the filter had caught in the lid and was syphoning out the water ... which we only discovered after removing the fish, filling the tank three times and trying to make it leak. On the up side, it is now sparkling clean and the fish survived!

Bugger Grin At least the fish are all OK!
