Is there a fish fostering service?

Ive had a bit of a home emergency, a leaky pipe has killed my floor and the whole downstairs floor has to be ripped up, dried and relaid. It is going to take at least three weeks and during that time, most of the big furniture is going into storage with smaller stuff being moved around to different rooms as needed.

I have a Jewel 180 tank, so obviously can't just move it every couple of days while its full. The storage place doesn't have the facilities to have the tank switched on and despite its lone occupant, a big ol' plec, being quite low maintenance, I don't think he'd survive being shoved in a garage for the best part of a month.

No one I know has fish of any sort to just pop him in their tank for the month. He's quite a size anyway, around the 11-12 inch mark at least. I also don't know anyone with enough house space to have the entire tank for me.

I can get the tank into storage, no problem, but is there such a thing as a fishery, like kennels or a cattery, that I could leave Leopold the leopard plec with? Or does anyone have any suggestions for what else I can do? I'm on the brink of permanently reforming him through Free Ads or something because I can't think of any other way of moving the tank while keeping him alive.

Largest city or nearby?

Chopstheduck · 18/09/2013 15:41

try your local fish shops, I've seen fostered fish in ours before.

What about asking a pet shop/somewhere that sells fish? They might like to use him for "display" for a couple of weeks.

DespicableWee · 18/09/2013 16:09

Great idea! I hadn't thought of asking a fish shop, thanks.

I'm near Gateshead. I don't know of any fish shops that aren't Pets at Home which is why Leopold is a lone fish, I don't know of any decent, reputable shops that I can get him tank mates from that won't die in a week and infect the tank with something Hmm This seems like an excellent time to make some enquiries though. Even if nowhere can house Leo, at least I'll have an idea of where to find some more fish to liven the tank up once the flooring debacle is sorted out.

Thanks all Smile

There are a lot of fish rehoming groups on Facebook, you could try there. If it;s someone local then you'd be able to check them out first to make sure he'd be well looked after.

LFS also a good bet, if it's a specialist place.

Look up tropical + fish + Gateshead - there seem to be a few shops, wih Tropical Team looking quite reliable from my quick Google.

My local fish shop would def board him - I bet there's one near you that will too.
