Thinking of converting my community tank and keeping a single cichlid

Hi all,
I have a 185 litre tank, which I appreciate isn't huge, but (providing I can rehome existing fish) I'm considering keeping a single specimen, a larger cichlid perhaps? I'm pretty sure my tank is too small for an Oscar, but would it house a single Jack Dempsey? Or does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks

I'm not a huge fan of cichlids so don't know much about them. I think Dempseys get a bit too big for 40 gallons but I'm sure there are other slightly smaller species that would work.

If not cichlids then I'd be tempted to track down a breeding pair of Mogurnda gobies- very pretty colours, easy to keep and thrive in neutral, hard-ish water so should be OK with the tapwater that most of the UK gets. You could get a synodontis catfish too if you fancied it, there are a few species that would suit the same kind of water.

These are also really amazing fish and defo better off on its own as it will eat almost anything else you put in there.

Or you could go for a pair of these if you can find somewhere that stocks females.

Wow, Eau, how do you know about all these?! I have never head of any of those three - how gorgeous is that one that yawns?! Must confess, I suggested a cichlid because I don't know much about other fish "families." I'm going to scout that website as it looks good. If I found the perfect fish, I wonder if my new best mate at the fish shop would be able to order it!!

Years of wishful thinking! I first saw the Mogurndas at a LFS that has a few oddballs in- they look like peacock gobies which I had at the time, only a lot bigger. And I have loads of fish books.

If your local place can't get something then try looking for a breeder or an aquatic society, they quite often have fish shows with auctions. There are a couple of mail order places too; I've used Tri-Mar before, they have a good range and use a specialist fish courier.
