Selling an established tank

We're going to have to sell our aquarium at some point this year as we are emigrating to Australia. I've been very attached to my lovely fishy community and just want them to go to a good home - but how do I find a good home for a 180 litre planted stocked tank? Do I advertise on gumtree? Anywhere else? Any tips on selling? And any idea how to price it?

eBay would be your best bet. Make the start price low for quick bidders. Take as many pictures as you can too. What tank is it??

Ooh I'm not sure about eBay! How could I be picky about who they went to live with? I'd want them to go to a caring knowledgeable home. It's a tropical community - two large angels, a large red tailed shark, two kribs, some danios, hatchets, glass catfish and shrimp. Lovely looking Juwel tank on cabinet; we spent a fortune setting it up and have cared for it impeccably for about five years. Are you interested???

If you want it to go to a good home then somewhere like Aquarists classified would probably be your best bet. You could also try a local aquatic club or a specialist aquatic forum. Maybe try somewhere like a GP/dentist surgery, nursing home etc.

Ebay would be good for researching prices, if you can find anything similar then just watch and see how much it goes for.

Id give your fishies a good home!

Selling an empty tank is MILES easier (I am somewhat of a fish geek)

However, fish tanks have a very small resale value :-(

Established tanks sell for about 1/3 of empty ones on Ebay.
I got my first tank that way, from a desperate guy moving to Australia the next day. Almost all the fish survived the move.

Can't wait until my kitchen is rebuilt and I can get a new.tank...

A lot of established tanks on ebay have got things like tinfoil barbs and pangasius in them. People realise what they've got on their hands and then try to dump the whole lot :( You do get some bargains on there from people that are selling for genuine reasons.

There are some proper dodgy ones though, some just list the tank and then when the buyer turns up say that they have to take the fish as well or they're getting flushed. I know a couple of people who have had that happen to them.
