Its the tank we set up almost 3 weeks ago using the media from our original tank (50% of the media but its a smaller tank and only 3 fish in it).

Water has been clear for 2 weeks (very clear), i have been doing water changes every 3-4 days (just 20-30%), nothing new has been put into the tank other than the baby Molly from the big tank.

Got up this morning and the tank has what looks like white powder on the inside of the tank and the fish seem to be gasping a little at the top.

I have tested the water:

N03 - 10
N02 -1
GH - 16
KH - 10
Ph - 8.0
Cl2 -0

All 3 female guppys are pregnant (2 very close to giving birth), i did turn the heater up a little as i was told this hurrys the females along a bit and some people say it gives you more male fry, should i turn it back down?, i think its on 24c.

I'm not sure what else to do? i dont want to lose my females, i could move them to the fry tank but this is still being cycled (although is testing ok) and there are fry in there.

NO2 is a little high, everything else seems OK. What's the temperature? IS the white powder on the glass all over or just near the top?

Marne · 06/09/2012 13:43

Temp is 24c (but will check it again in a bit), white powdery stuff is on the inside of the glass and around the filter, cant see anything on the top but will go and have a closer look and check on the fish Sad.

Ok, have changed a bit of the water, theres deffently no white powder on the top of the water, its mainly around the filter (wiped my finger along it and left a trail), temp was 25 so i have turned it down a little. I think dd1 has been feeding them as there was some food on the bottom, i have removed what i can. Will leave it for a bit and hope it settles a little.

Did you see any bubbles when you wiped it? Sometimes you can get really fine bubbles that look powdery just after you've done a water change.

Marne · 06/09/2012 14:09

No bubbles, much finer, almost like chlorine (sp) in a swimming pool.

I have put a picture on my profile.

Isn't the chlorine in swimming pools gas bubbles? Hard to see what it is from the pictures.

Marne · 06/09/2012 15:47

chlorine is chemicals.

Its deffently powdery, i can feel it when i run my finger along it. I guess all i can do is keep checking the water (testing) and doing water changes. I will have a word with dd1 about feeding them too much too Smile.

Problem solved Grin

Keeping fish and having autistic children is never a good idea.

Just caught dd2 feeding the fish, i then went into my room and the tank treatment i had bought (to cycle the fry tank) was empty as well as the little tube of oxygen tablets.

My female guppy tank had been fed with a handful of fish food, dd2 then told me she had put all the oxygen tablets in yesterday (hense the powder). I have now vacumed up all the food and did a larger water change.

My fry tank had been given a whole bottle of the cycling mixture (luckily it was only a tiny bottle) and a hand full of fish food, so had to vacume and do water change.

I have now put all the fish food and treatments in the bathroom, up high (and the bathroom is locked).

Fingers crossed the fish will be ok, i'm hoping the oxygen tablets cant do much damage (there must have been 5 or 6 tablets) and hopefuly the fry have not died of shock from a big water change and being chased with the vacume. Luckily my best fish are downstairs and have not been touched.

Bloody kids Sad
