Have fished 4 out of the tank (and put in the breeding box), hopefuly there will be more but i have a feeling most were eaten Sad. how many babbies do guppies have? they are only young guppies, all 3 still look pregnant so not sure who gave birth, do they pop them all out in one go or a few at a time? (should i be keeping a look out for more?).

I think fish start of as eggs, not fish babies - so it's eggs you should be looking out for, not little fish.

Not if they're livebearers (such as guppies, mollies and swordtails) ProudNeathGirl. :)

I think guppies usually have about 30 babies, but apparently their first batch of babies are usually quite low quality and it's best to just let them get eaten. :( They usually have them mostly in one go, I watched my guppy give birth over the space of about an hour, but she had a few several hours before and a couple several hours after, so there might be more to come. I also think they might be able to have simultaneous pregnancies, but not 100% sure about that.

Guppies are livebearers, they don't lay eggs.

They can have something from 5 - 50 fry in one go, and then the same again about a month later so be prepared for lots of fry.

I don't catch them anymore and I always have some survivors as the tank is heavily planted and lots of hiding spots in wood. The prettiest ones I keep, the rest gets sold / given away.

Well that's told me! Blush
I never knew some fish give birth to live babies - you live and learn!

MamaPizza · 30/08/2012 12:46

And they eat their babies straight after Shock Hence they need to be separated if you want to keep them.

It's guppies, platies, swordtails and mollies that give birth to live babies.

We have 7 now (cant see anymore in the tank but there could be more), most of them seem healthy, a couple look less healthy (not swimming as much). Was hoping they were not pg when i got them as i wanted to breed them with my very pretty guppy (in hope to get similar babbies), i will keep fishing the babbies out and puting into the breeding box and see what happens. I already have one person after some babbies so should be able to find homes for most of them, i will keep a couple males for my other tank (as i only have 4 at the moment). Its all exciting for dd1. We did have 4 baby mollies but we are now down to one Sad.
