tetras or guppies/mollies?

dc is excited because I have promised we get a fishtank when we move to a bigger place.
I am thinkig of a 60l tank with a couple of ground fish and either some (15?) tetras or a 'herd' of guppies or mollies. I guess guppies/mollies are more interesting (babies and such), but tetras are prettier...
what do you think?

Tetras are more aggressive and tend to kill each other, guppies are gorgeous. Dalmatian mollies are nice if you have just loads of them and maybe coloured gravel.

I love my guppies. Well, I don't literally love them, but they are very sweet and very pretty.

had to google dalmatian mollies. look very nice. will see then what the pet shop has on offer.
or should I get the fish somewhere else? (have a pets-at-home close by)

There are loads of different species of tetra. It is rare for them to turn on each other unless something is wrong with one of them but they do scrap a bit to establish a pecking order, just like any other shoaling fish.

There are a few species of tetra that would be suitable for a 60L tank, maybe some neon tetras? They are pretty, small and easy to look after.

Mollies are a bit on the large side for a 60L tank but guppies would be a good choice. Make sure you've got somewhere to rehome the babies to if you want a mixed shoal!

Pets @ Home don't have a great reputation for fish but they can vary, have a look first and if you see lots of ill-looking fish then try somewhere else.

We have a 60ltr tank with 6 guppies, 1 bristle nose pleco and 3 teras (was 4 but one died today), i'm not that taken with the tetras, the guppies are much better to watch. Our guppies are all male and get on great, the tetras have never nipped each other or the guppies (they don't do much TBH other than swim up and down all day). The pleco is my favorite although he is a bit shy.

I would go for just guppies or mollies.

What are your water stats, OP?

Guppies and mollies (though I agree the latter get a bit big) are happier in hard alkaline water, tetras tend to prefer soft and acid though they are not all fussy. Platies are another alternative. Look carefully at guppies or platies in the shop, though, as they can be overbred and sickly.

Black neon tetras and black phantom tetras aren't too fussy about water stats and black phantoms have quite a cool display behaviour.

we are in a very hard water area. so guppies should be ok.

I start to like the idea of guppies, actually.

Just be warned - guppies breed like crazy! We started out with just three and ended up with hundreds!

MousyMouse · 15/06/2012 12:44

what about the ground fish?

my sister has a clown loach to keep the snails at bay but 60l is too small for such a big fish. are ther smaller more suitable snail eaters?

I would go for guppies and platys but like ROT suggested they do breed like erm.... Guppies? How about an all male tank? It's the males that are pretty anyway!
My favourites are out platys. I also love shrimp for when the tank matures :-D
