My harlequin rasboras have spawned :-)

This morning I caught them doing the mating dance (I knew female was carrying eggs, but having read that they are really difficult to breed thought nothing of it) so I moved the pair to my q tank where the proceed to lay loads of eggs. I really hope I get a couple of fry from them as I was planning on buying some more anyway. The other female is looking ready to spawn too so keeping an eye on her too.

Also I've bought myself a 370 litre tank with all the filters/heaters etc for £50 so starting to set that up too :-) so even if all the eggs survive, there's plenty of room for them.

Oh that's great! I have some harlequins too and they're really pretty little fish. Mine have never spawned though, and if they did the eggs would be hoovered up pretty damn quick!

I am incredibly jealous of your new setup, it sounds amazing. What are you planning for it??

ZeldaUpNorth · 02/06/2012 19:34

I'm thinking a shoal of peppered and panda Cory's (maybe 8 of each), my harlequins, some tetras, maybe a 2 dwarf gourami and guppies. I'm not sure what else I can put in but I'd like a few "centrepiece" fish then quite a few shoaling fish. If you have your "dream" setup I'd like to hear it for inspiration"

Also my new tank will be stocked gradually so will seem really bare because I don't have the money to buy loads of fish at once, I'd rather spend the money on things to keep the ones I have happy and healthy then fish when I have a bit extra. I'm well chuffed with my tank, I'll try to link a pic but on my tablet so dunno if it'll work

wow - it will look amazing! I have 8 corys; albinos and pappered, they're gorgeous! They also seem to spawn every five seconds but none have survived. I also have lots of other shoaling fish, but my "centrepiece" fish are my weather loaches which I always bang on about on here. They are brilliant fish, with very individual personalities.

Hmm.... trying to think of a cool tropical fish for you.... want to suggest a ghost knife fish, but I think they get very aggressive. Might you be tempted to make it into a stunning marine tank?

Ha! Brilliant pics!
I am sickeningly jealous :)

ZeldaUpNorth · 02/06/2012 19:58

I'd love a marine, but i dont feel confident enough yet, i've only had tropicals a few weeks, plus i love the corys. I put a silly bid on that tank (£55), not expecting in a million years to win it, all the other ones i've been watching have gone for over £100.

Yes I've only done tropical, but when I move house and sell my current 300 litre tank I might invest in a slightly smaller tank and have a go at a marine tank with lovely corals, etc. I know it's very precise and science-y but I'm willing to give it the effort...

EauRouge · 03/06/2012 10:09

I hope you did a child-less cycle on that tank first, Zelda.

I would love a marine tank one day. My main barriers are cost and pure laziness Grin

ZeldaUpNorth · 03/06/2012 12:57

Yeah EauRouge i added blue smarties for 3 weeks before adding them Wink

Quite pleased with it. Just need to add a few more fish cos it looks empty lol

I am quite sick with jealousy :-) The harlequins look lovely by the way. You must take some more pics when you've got your coreys in there. Did you decide upon a centrepiece fish?

ZeldaUpNorth · 05/06/2012 15:11

This is what i'm thinking so far, though it may change. I know aqadvisor isn't the best source (i know eau rouge doesn't like it) but i'm stocking gradually and if i believe its getting too crowded in there i'll stop. The peppered corys (7) are in there but they're hiding, just need to get used to it i suppose. Only problem with having a big tank (apart from i can't reach the bottom cos i'm a short arse) is that i can't keep an eye on each fish cos theres too many hiding places lol.

Oooooh you got Peppered Coreys - I've always preferred them to Pandas. Albinos are cool too, mine seem to eject eggs every 2 seconds :)
Stocking gradually is a good idea, tho I cannot lecture anyone as I get over excited and buy far too many.

Ha - very irritating not being able to reach the bottom - it's the same in my tank. Plus my bloody loaches are so tame now they swim right round my hands while I have them in the water.

Out of interest, where did you get the tank? When I've moved and am settled, I'll be looking to buy a new tank and could do with finding myself a good bargain! Fancy keeping Oscars.... :)

FermezLaBouche · 05/06/2012 15:20

ooh sorry - just seen your link. Setup looks great! I've never kept Rainbowfish, but they are so pretty, aren't they? And the tank will be quite entertaining to watch, with all those coreys bobbing up and down!

ZeldaUpNorth · 05/06/2012 15:24

Got the tank from ebay, a real bargain, didn't actually mean to win it, just put a daft bid in lol.

The fish seem to be loving it, swimming all over, into the flow of the filter/over the air bubbles etc.

Interesting - the town you won the tank from is exactly where I'm moving to!!!
Good price though!

ZeldaUpNorth · 05/06/2012 15:32

Its about a 15 min drive to therefrom here, you can stop by for a look at my tank one day Wink
