Grin

Seriously, those fish are taking over and I'm loving it. I only had one small tank a few months ago. In recent months I have been reading and learning, and I am now cycling tank 5 and tank 6 and thinking about tank 7. I need help Blush

Thankfully DH is very supportive, so is DS who knows all fish by name, and he hasn't even realized that I have sneaked out many toys to make room for the tanks.

Current set-up:

Tank 1 - the chaos tank (living room):
142 litres
sand substrate, coconuts, bogwood, live plants
big community of platies, guppies, corys and minnows
some shrimps and snails
It's called the chaos tank because those fishies in there are maaaad! Constant movement.

Tank 2 - the retirement tank (living room):
120 litres
fine black gravel, black background, purple slate, purple live plants
two ram pairs - two of them blue rams, the other two golden rams - who are called Bernard and Rose and Graeme and Pearl (the old couples, see?)
eight pygmy cories - their 'grandchildren' who are visiting and playing around

Tank 3 - the original tank (DS' room):
55 litres
sand, live plants, a skull (DS chose it...)
shrimps (two preggers at the moment) and eight neon tetras

Tank 4 - the posh tank (kitchen):
40 litres
fine black gravel, black background, bamboo hut, bamboo bridge, live plants
one male betta and nine harlequins
Very stylish tank (think fluval chi) that was my birthday present

Tank 5 - the cute tank (kitchen):
25 litres
playsand, brown glossed back
This is cycling, I am planning on adding one dwarf puffer. Decoration possibly coconuts or similar

Tank 6 - the kindergarten (our bedroom):
60 litres
After cycling this will be a fry tank as we are getting overrun with fry in tank 1. I might make this a bit of a fun tank, build huts with lego or so.
My local fish dealer has agreed to take them off me 50 pence to £1 per fish and I can accumulate credit with him, which means that I can always get testing kits / food etc in exchange for a few fry.

Tank 7 - the dream (kitchen):
Starting to read up on marine and once I have a new job in September I will make this dream come true.

Soooo, who is next? Confession time Grin

You've got it baaaaad Grin

I only have the one tank now and it's been empty for, ooh, about a year. I've finally got the plants how I want them and I'm going to cycle it now in preparation for a new resident. I gave DD1 the choice between some minnows or a paradise fish and she's gone for a paradise fish (actually I'd seen some rummynose rasboras that I quite fancy the look of but I'm on a tight budget and can't afford to spend £50 on fish). She's going to call him Dinosaur Grin

I'd love a marine tank one day. I don't think I'd even have any fish, I'm just fascinated by live rock, you get all kinds of funny things coming out of it.

MamaPizza · 23/04/2012 10:29

You have just put another bug in my head, I love the look of paradise fish. No, no, no, I got enough. I think I need a restraining jacket Grin

It's good to hear that you are getting back into fish, I know how passionate you are. Maybe your DD will love Dinosaur so much that she agrees to sell some toys and you can have your four tanks again? [hopeful emoticon]

I am fascinated by marine. We are both scuba divers, well we always dive on holidays, and to have a little reef in your home would be amazing. I am going to get as much coral as I can and just a few fish to keep DS happy (he wants Nemo and Dory Hmm). If all works out and I get that job, I am getting this

Ah, Nemo and Dory have a lot to answer for Grin I think I would like a clown fish but regal tangs get too big and I am too lazy.

That Red Sea Max is meant to be pretty good- fingers crossed you get the job!

Deedy · 23/04/2012 15:23

At one time I had quite a few tanks because the fish in my main 200l tank kept breeding!

I had the main tank, a 100l tank with a couple of goldies in, a small tank with a betta in and then about three small tanks raising various fry - guppies, cherry barbs, bristlenose plecs mostly.

Things are a bit quieter now and I just have the main tank in the living room - makes the water changes much easier!

MamaPizza · 24/04/2012 08:23

Hello Deedy! You seem to be cured Grin

At the moment I live fish, I breathe fish, I think fish. At last I found a hobby that is right for me. I can't see myself going back to one tank, but time will tell.

I have only just started but am hooked, just wish dh would let me buy more tanks (and i wish i had more space for them), i may have to kick dh out to make room Grin.

At the moment i have a 60ltr tank which is home to 4 rummy nose tetra's (was 5), 6 male guppies and a bristle nose pleco.

Now my tank is fully stocked i am itching to buy another, i want a betta and would love some mollies, would also love to have baby fish (maybe if i get a bigger tank i can breed my bristle nose pleco and some guppies).

It is a great hoby, just not a very sociable one Grin, i seem to be spending more time glued to the fish tank.

Marne · 27/04/2012 19:43

Dd2 wants a nemo too but i am scared i will kill him and i don't think i could live withmyself if i did Sad

MamaPizza · 28/04/2012 08:47

I'm not sociable anyway Grin I could spend hours sitting in front of the tanks watching them. Who needs friends? Pah ;)

Have you sold the other tank? Surely your DH should let you keep it and you can have your betta.

Nemo is apparently easy, but I won't venture into marine until I am 100% sure I can keep them alive. Planning is half the fun.

FermezLaBouche · 28/04/2012 10:54

I have just sold one of my tanks due to extreme skintness :( So aside from the ones at work I have responsibility for, I only have one left. But it's a good 'un!
300 litres: platys, swordtail (still don't know how that got in there - I've never bought swordtails!) harlequins, albino cories, neons, American Flagfish, bristlenose plec and last but not least...my beautiful Weather Loaches. I LOVE my tank and the fact there's so many species in there but not a scrap of trouble.

I wish I had enough space in my house to have 7 like you! :)

MamaPizza · 28/04/2012 11:37

Sounds like a fab community tank. Would love to have a huge tank, but the layout of the house won't allow me. The two bigger tanks are left and right of the fireplace, but would love to have gotten a huge 6ft one or so.

I don't have space - I made space Grin Less toys for DS (he loves watching his fishies anyway and taking pictures of them with his kiddizoom), less junk. All happy.

OP posts:
Marne · 28/04/2012 17:33

I sold the tank Sad but would like something bigger anyway, i am working on dh, i just need him to part with his trendy side board so i can replace it with a huge tank Smile, i might try and clear dd1's room this week too (i'm sure i could fit a tank in there somewhere).

MamaPizza · 30/04/2012 08:26

But you made profit on your bargain tank which you can now invest into a bigger tank!

I realized that you always find space when you want to. Hope you can convince your DH.

We've just got the one tank - with two south american puffers and a handful of neons. And, some golden apple snails who breed like mad, and provide snails for the puffers to crunch their beaks on.

I am becoming a little obsessive about the plants. I just bloody love it. What do you use for fertiliser? I've got that iron stuff in the substrate and a peat bag with fertiliser, and nearly finished a bottle of something or another that has potassium in it. We're starting to get a wee bit of algae - think I might be overfertilising. 6 hours of lights on in the day, some natural sunlight.

Bloody love fish, me!

MamaPizza · 02/05/2012 07:52

Puffers are so cute! Can't wait to have my dwarf puffer, tank should be cycled in the next two weeks.

For bog standard green plants I just add the P@H plant fertilizer a week after the water change.

For the tank with the purple plants I use www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Easy-Life-EasyCarbo-250ml-carbo-Carbon-Fertilizer-Aquatic-Plants-/310395489527?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item4845034cf7#ht_500wt_969 this stuff. It will also be used for the dwarf puffer as I am going to scape the tank with a grass plant. Should get them delivered tomorrow.

I don't really have much algae on any of the tanks. Maybe I am just lucky or I have too many pesty snails.
