Warning - probably very dim query!

I want to add a couple of coconuts to the new tank, something like this. Maybe with a peek hole in it. I have seen a few on ebay for a reasonable price, like this one. DH says he can just get a coconut at Asda and do it himself. Now, please help solve a domestic - is that really ok? Don't they need to be treated in a special way beforehand or is he right? I don't mind if he is, but I just don't want him to harm the water. He just wants to do some work with his hands, men Hmm

Yes, you can make them yourself, a lot of fishkeepers do. Instructions and pics here. You could grow moss on it, or anubias or java fern if you prefer. Or all three if it's a massive coconut.

You made someone very happy :) I was just on the phone to DH and told him about your link and he can't wait to do it. He loves showing off his DIY skills. He wants to add a door and windows... The link is really good, so they need boiling but otherwise it's simple and fun. Might even get DS involved Grin Have seen some with stuff growing on them, will probably do that too. He wants at least two, so one will get some 'hair'.

Doors and windows? Perhaps a chimney and a little picket fence made out of tooth picks around the garden too? Grin

If you want to put moss on it then this is the one, you just tie it on with some black cotton. It can take a week or two to stick on, then you can get rid of any of the cotton that's left.

Don't give him ideas, he would really have a picket fence and more Grin Maybe fake snow at Christmas time? Flowers in the garden?
Thanks for the link, will show him in a bit when he is back.

Done! Picture added on my profile.

The coconuts were smaller than expected, so just basic ones, but maybe in summer, if we find bigger ones, we will have one with windows etc..

For £1 total cost and a bit of work, this is the best tank decoration ever!

Wow! Very impressive. Grin I might have to have a go myself. What did you do with all the coconut, make curry?

MamaPizza · 16/03/2012 09:57

It was easy peasy, the only pita was having to boil them for what seemed like ages. I think I had four lots of fresh boiled water and each of them 20 minutes. The nice thing is that we made them as we wanted them, all three have a different opening, better than pre-fabricated ones.

Curry? Home-made? Ha ha, you don't know me. My home-made curry looks like this: fry chicken, open jar of ready sauce, add to chicken, simmer, eat. Grin
I ate a few bits, DH tried but it was too dry for him, DS was grossed out after only licking a piece. Binned the rest.

Hmm, I made some coconut ice-cream once using coconut milk, I bet I could use fresh coconut though. How do you get the damn things open? I bought one once and couldn't figure it out.

MamaPizza · 16/03/2012 17:35

He used the dremel to open it. Quite messy but well we got there in the end. I only like coconut in my pina colada Grin
