am i suitable for for fish?

i have two cats and a dog. would that be a problem for fish in a tank? also, what sort of fish should i get? i always loved those little neon type ones but don't know anything about them. are they difficult to look after? expensive to keep? i am thinking of getting them for ds1 (5) as a xmas present but i am fully aware i will be responsible for them.

The neons are tropical fish so need a special tank with heater, filter etc so can be quite expensive. They also need regular water changes etc.

We had a 5ft tropical tank with many fish but did not have the time too look after them properly so they went to a better home.

I don't think the other animals would cause concern, we had 2 cats and as the tank has a lid they could not harm them and soon grew bored.

I have 2 cats and they have never bothered with the fish. As long as the tank is out of the way so that the fish don't get stressed out then it should be fine.

It takes about 6 weeks to prepare a tank for fish so you wouldn't be able to get them in time for Christmas- I would wait until all the chaos is over anyway, a new tank needs a lot of work at the beginning and I'm sure you'll be busy anyway. You could always get all the tank and gubbins for the Christmas pressie and then get the fish later on.

The type of fish you choose depends on a lot of different things, there's quite a lot of stuff to learn and it's pretty geeky. It'll save you so much trouble in the long run if you do things properly at the start though.

Keeping fish can be pretty expensive but there are loads of bargains on ebay at the moment, everyone's selling and hardly anyone's buying! Buying a second hand tank will save you loads of money.
