Herbie - suitable for 4 year old?

I know it's a U, so I'm not worried about a rush of bad language, sex and violence - ds1 is quite keen to go see this. It's the first time ever he'll have been to a cinema (he's 4) so I want to make sure the film we go to see is at his level - don't want the plot to go completely over his head. The other choice is Madagascar which I've heard mixed reviews about too.

Advice please! Ooo, also some tips for our first ever cinema visit would be handy - will book online so we don't have to queue and get plenty of sweets... anything else I need to know about taking a 4 year old to the cinema?!

I'm dying to see you get some replies, Georgina. My nephew renamed himself Herbie after seeing the orignal (1960s) movie. For about 4 years he insisted on being called "Herbie". Very sweet. The original was certainly suitable for a 4yo.

I have very fond memories myself of Herbie, I have to confess I think I need to know whether the latest one lives up to the original before making my mind up... would hate to have a figetty boring first cinema experience for ds1...

Looks suitably silly. My kids are age 3 & 5. I think the 3yo might get slightly freaked out by the "alive" car, but the 5yo would love it.

I've just seen a madagascar clip now though and can't make up my mind! Argh, dilemma!

i took my little boy whos 4 1/2 to see it and he loved it- laughed his head off. it had nothing in it that i would say is wrong for a 4yr old.... since then hes really gotten into the older herbie movies too.......

Have seen Herbie and we all loved it but if I was you I would choose Madagasgar definatly (sp) a better first film.

I'm taking ds who is 4 next week. He has been to the cinema to see Robots before but this I think he will love even more. He is soooo into cars and is 'thing' at the moment is Nascar, so hopefully he'll love it.

I took dd aged four to Madagascar she loved it. My tip is dont let them know there is a toilet unless they tell you they are going to wet themselves or you will be up and down like a yoyo

GeorginaA · 06/08/2005 18:26

lol lucy - will remember that

Okay, well I showed ds1 the trailers of both today and he's decided on Madagascar after all. If we get a chance later on in the holidays and he coped well with the cinema this time round then I may well take him to see Herbie then

Thought I'd do an update. Took ds1 to see Herbie today as we'd picked up the 4 pack of original Herbie films (more for me really ) and he adored them.

We both LOVED the film - really holds to the spirit of the original and some really great moments. He was a bit tearful when Herbie almost got broken up in the middle of the film and wanted to go home at that point, but was glad he stuck it through and it's all he can talk about at the moment! He's gone Herbie mad!

Probably worth renting at least the Love Bug out first to see if they like the style, but we rate it MUCH higher than Madagascar! Was ace. And I shall be buying the DVD when it's released too!
