DH got this today for us to watch. But the subject matter suggests it might be too much for DS#2. Any experience please?

noooooooo

I wouldn't. It's very graphic and the end especially is incredibly upsetting (do you know what happens, don't want to spoil it for you)

It's a beautiful film, but very traumatic.

I cry like a baby every time I see it, it's awful

We're big Studio Ghibli fans, and the DCs love the films, but this is one we've not shown them. It's far too harrowing I think (it's based on a true story iirc, which is just gut-wrenching).

IMoveTheStars · 20/03/2010 14:22

Have you seen Pom Poko yet? that's quite a strange one, but entertaining

Which Ghibli have you watched?

OmicronPersei8 · 20/03/2010 14:36

We're Ghibli fans, bought Grave of the Fireflies years ago but still haven't been able to watch it - I think we got one minute in once. I'm still in that can't-watch-anything-upsetting mode after having the DC, will watch it one day, not now. So NO to your DS watching it!

OrmRenewed · 20/03/2010 14:39

Ooookay. Thanks

We've seen Kiki, Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Tales from Earthsea. Love them all. I suspect DH didn't look carefully

Howl's Moving Castle should be OK, we watched Laputa today with our 2yo, so that will be fine too.

Princess Mononoke is another no no though - very violent.

FiveOrangePips · 24/03/2010 23:00

I wouldn't let my dc watch Grave of the Fireflies, but dd has watched Princess Mononoke from the age of 5yrs, no problems, they both love Pom Poko and Howl's Moving Castle (have watched this a lot over the years since ds was 2+, DS is scared of Shrek, so it isn't like they watch scary movies as a rule). They like Spirited Away, but find it a bit scary sometimes.

Ghibli is great, I was hoping to buy Ponyo for dc to watch, but it still isn't available yet, sigh. The Cat Returns is lovely too, and Totoro is fab for all ages imho.

Ryoko · 27/03/2010 10:26

Nothing wrong with Princess Mononoke, it's hardly violent at all and is far less violent then rubbish like Tom and Jerry plus the few acts of violence are justified to the tell the story.

I wouldn't let the kid watch Grave of Firefly's it's a harrowing story of losing everything during times of war, it will make the kid cry on a par with Watership Down.

OrmRenewed · 28/03/2010 11:14

Well so far this week we've watched the Cat Returns and Nausicaa. Both cast a spell over all 3 - even my 13yr old who likes Gears of War and Halo Total silence the entire time. Miraculous!

Why are you letting a 13 year old play games that have BBFC ratings of 15 and 18?

OrmRenewed · 29/03/2010 08:29

Because he enjoys them. And I don't know a single 13yr old that doesn't play the.

Of course you could mind your own business.

Apologies if that was a little rude ryoko. But I am not in the mood for sententious moralising today.

THat apology was a bit rude too. Sorry.

Not in a good mood today

Well I work in the games industry, my other half used to work in a games shop, I have over 400 games in my collection and own all the current systems.

When the time comes (I haven't given birth yet) I wouldn't let my kid play games beyond his/her age group, I've played and finished both Gears games and all Halo games, Halo isn't too bad I think I would let a 10 year old play them but Gears deserves it's 18 rating IMO.

I just hope you are not one of those people who complains about violent games making kids violent while at the same time buying the things for them (Those people are my biggest pet hate).

OrmRenewed · 30/03/2010 08:01

Halo is a actually quite beautiful with a wonderfully constructed world to inhabit. I have no problem with that. I must admit I don't know much about Gears of War - it seems to be the usual shoot-em-up thing. But again it's something all his friends play.

But no I won't blame X-Box for any (as yet undisplayed) violence. He has many facets to his life, not just computer games - atm he is fascinated with Macbeth (he's studying it at school) and we are about to watch it on DVD. Now there's gratuitous and bloody violence for you!

OP posts:
Ryoko · 30/03/2010 19:15

Oh yes I agree about Halo, there is a series of books based on the story and an anime, Gears is a little too gritty for kids IMO with some proper monster looking monsters and grim environments.

dizietsma · 30/03/2010 19:24

GAWD NO!

I can barely watch it, it's soul crushingly depressing. Good, but perhaps wait until he's a bit older before you start exposing him to cute 3 year old orphan girls starving to death.

DandyDan · 29/06/2010 23:12

I am pretty sure our youngest watched Grave of the Fireflies with us when she was 7 or 8. She did cry, as we all did, but for us and our family, it worked that we watched it together. Our children have watched all the other Ghibli films from being toddlers - they love them all to bits and all have their own favourites. Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday are superb "growing up" films, especially for girls.
