I really fancy going and ds1 wants to come too as he likes the trailer.

I really loved the book but am worried the movie will disappoint? I only go to the movies once a month or so and don't want to waste my cash if it's tosh.

TIA

its terrible, saw it last night. twas possibly the worst film I have seen for ages

I haven't read the book but from what I've heard it strays from the plot heavily

Hope others enjoyed it though

(low point being the bit where she is dragged round on a sleigh by a french bulldog - well it is peter jackson after all)

I too loved the book, and because of that, am not wanting to go see it at the pics.

I find in general that books made into films never really work too well. Even harry potter, and I love the movies as much as the books. With harry potter tho, I know that they are not going to be as good as the detail in the books are too much to make a decent length film (if the stuck to the books, each film would be more that 6hrs long!), so I enjoy the films for what they are, and except the differences.

I haven;t seen 'my sisters keeper' for the same reasons that I won;t see 'the lovely bones'. I don;t think it will work, and it will ruin the book for me in my head.

the film was such a dissappointment
.

agree with prettywhiteguitar that it was the worst film i had seen for ages too.

save your money....

shit film

florencepink · 26/02/2010 14:07

Haven't seen it yet.. but it has been given a pretty good review on empire

duffpancake · 05/03/2010 00:02

I didn't think it was too bad. Everyone who has read the book will have a different picture in their head of what the afterlife looks like; the way it's depicted in the film is just one way it could be imagined (it's been a while since I read it, but it was less colourful in my mind. And a bit more translucent.)

There are, as with all book adaptations, changes but the main difference I noticed was that despite the subject matter the book ended on an uplifting note for me, whereas the film left me feeling slightly disappointed.

DD who is a bookworm but hasn't read this one saw the film tonight and she thought as a film on it's own was very good. Some of it was sad, tense and scary. She was surprised it was a 12A as it could affect younger kids.

She now wants to read the book, as the book is always better than the film, wants me to watch the film and was surprised at the negative critic's response. She is 15 so the empathy could be a factor in her enjoyment.

juicychops · 08/03/2010 15:11

just been to see this film (on my own) i thought it was quite good although i haven't read the book.

i cried a lot so good job i was on my own!

Curiousmama · 08/03/2010 17:50

Think I'll wait until it's on DVD then and rent it as having read the book first don't want it spoiling. thanks for everyone's input I didn't realise anyone else had replied as messages go from the I'm on link after a while.

I can't wait to see Crazy heart now, love Jeff Bridges anyway and also have a soft spot for country

it's not the worst film in the world

if you have read the book, you won't think it's the best either

the parents in the film are not developed enough, although the girl in the lead role is very, very good and somehow the way I imagined her

quite a nice 1970's vibe, if you like that sorta thing (and I do)

thankfully, the rape is downplayed as I watched this with my kids but still a bit scary in parts although it more hints than shows stuff

personally, I would wait for the dvd

hazlinh · 10/03/2010 12:00

i haven't read the book. didn't like the movie that much and there were too many surreal scenes of the in-between, but i agree that the girl in the lead role was very very very good. i cried buckets and i don't cry easily is the ending the same in the book, does anyone know? i can't believe thats how it all ended!! how anticlimactic!! hmm i didnt know she was raped though i suspected as much

LoveBeingAMummy · 10/03/2010 12:05

I went to a preview of it and took a friend who had recently read (and loved the book), I hadn;t read the whole book got about a third in.

I really enjoyed it and she did too. She said that the book had more about the sisters attempts to find out what happened whereas there wasn't as much of that in the film.

Thought the main girl was excellent, and the baddy was too.

Curiousmama · 10/03/2010 16:56

Thanks all am waiting for the dvd now. Off to see Alice tonight in 2D though. Ds1's friends say it's better in 2D, don't know why but I'm not complaining they only do 2D in our town at the moment so it'd mean going to next town to see 3D.
