If you've seen Princess and the Frog - when are the scarey bits please?

Help needed please...

I'm off to take my DD (nearly 4) to see Princess and the Frog tomorrow. She's seen Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs and Up with DP. However, last week he took her to Toy Story 2 in 3D and it was so noisy / scarey for her at the opening sequence that they only lasted minutes before he had to take her out and placate her with sweets and cuddles!

Is the start of Princess and the Frog gentle or should I take ear defenders (yes seriously ). Also, are the scarey bits well, scarey?

Thanks very much.

To me 4 is too young for the cinema. Can't you wait til it is out on DVD?

See here

It lists all of the scenes which may be unsuitable for young children.

MrsGumboots · 05/02/2010 23:32

DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!

We went tonight and my DD who is 7, was so scared we left after half an hour. She watches starwars, loves all the toy story movies and Stardust is a favourite. HOW this is a 'U' I will never know.

I was really cross - would you expect Disney to have Tarot Cards, Voodoo dolls, 'talking to the other side', and other black magic in? I didn't. The baddy rivals the child catcher from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'.

Truly disgusted with both Disney and the film reviewers.

I took 7y DD tonight, along with wo friends aged 7y and 4y.

DD wasn't scared at all, but did cry at one sad but near the end.

7y friend was a bit scared in places.

4y was feeling poorly so not sure how much she watched as she was snuggled up to her mum.

The scarier bits are on and off throughout the film, right to near the end.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 05/02/2010 23:41

fuck, i've bought tickets for sunday for dd's aged 3 and 5.

Hulababy · 06/02/2010 14:45

Most will go over the heads of the 3y, and deends on your 5yo's nature and disposition. As I said, 7y DD was fine and didn't get scared at all. She really enjoyed the film and has been recounting it all to DH this morning.

Hulababy · 06/02/2010 14:46

Head of 3yo; not suggesting your 3y has more than one

Twas i who went with Hula yesterday, my 4 year old really liked it, dispite feeling grotty, and whilst she snuggled in at the slightly scary bits with the voodoo man she didn't get why he was scary just that he was the bad guy (as all disney films have!) DD1 who's 7 was more scared by it but she is quite sensitive and is scared of everything! and even she said it wasn't that scary, again i think the voodoo and other side bit went over her head and she knows disney films have bad guys who get their comeupance in the end.

Hulababy · 07/02/2010 19:04

Yes, agree - don't think DD saw the voodoo man as being anything other than the "baddie" which all Disney films have. The other baddies were the black shadows - again, that is all she saw them as.

DD was more perturbed by the sad bit at the end, although only briefly.

kingfix · 07/02/2010 20:22

We took 2 3 yr olds and I wouldn't recommend it for that age - the plot went over their heads as you say and the scary bits were quite scary. Not traumatic but not worth it really, wish I'd waited until they were 4 or older I think

Tikkabillajive · 08/02/2010 11:09

I took my 4.5yo dd and 2yo ds yesterday and we all thought it was completely wonderful. Even ds sat still for most of it and laughed and danced along. The music is fantastic and it is funny and moving.

Agree that the voodoo man is just the archetypal Disney 'baddie' and actually neither of my two were at all bothered by him - I didn't think the scary bits were as bad as, say Ursula in The Little Mermaid or the bit where Snow White is lost in the forest. The voodoo man is quite silly and brightly coloured and somehow doesn't seem quite as menacing as the usual evil stepmother-type characters in other Disney films.

The sad bit is very moving but is also dealt with really beautifully I thought.

KnickKnack · 08/02/2010 11:16

My 6 and 7 yr olds watched it at the weekend (6yr old is a scardy cat usually!)...and both loved it, neither found it scary. They did watch it at home though (we don't have a cinema), so it may be louder/scarier in a dark cinema?

Thanks for all the replies

We did go and she did enjoy most of it - although has said that she was pleased when the naughty man got turned to stone.

All of the other stuff went over her head - to the extent that she thought the sad bit at the end was actually someone going swimming (an idea that I hurriedly agreed with).

Just for note if your looking this up. The first 10/15 minutes is just a nice build up to the story. No loud noises or anything. I think it was the loud start to Toy Story which caught her out last time.

I took DD 4 to it. First cinema trip.

I was really disappointed by the film and didn't think there was much of a story, no decent music.

DD was terrified in several places and clung to me and I could feel her heart pounding. She kept saying loudly "I want to go home". She is in a sensitive phase at the moment and maybe wouldn't have been bothered by it when she was younger.

I kept whispering there would be a happy ending and she enjoyed the ending.

It doesn't seem a cosy film to watch with children and I can't think it has much for adults. I'm not sure who it is aimed at?

Having been to New Orleans I enjoyed the references to New Orleans but that was about it.

Are all Disney films like this? This is the first one I've been to in recent years.
