Recommendations for films like The Secret Garden (1993)...

... to watch with 3.5 year old.
I've just re-discovered the book - a fav when I were a lass... and have spent a lovely wet afternoon watching the 1993 film with DS, 3.5yrs. Can anyone recommend films in a similar vein, i.e. not at all scary, no connected merchandising and generally heart-warming to entertain mother and child alike?

DD and I love this film, and the film of A Little Princess. Also The Railway Children and Black Beauty.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

The Railway Children (is on this week actually)

Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Mary Poppins

The Water Babies (was my absolute favourite when i was about 4)

The Sound of Music

Some of the old Disney films? Snow White, The Jungle Book etc...

AAAAAAAARH not Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, that will have me running for the accumulated fluff and dog hair behind the sofa let alone DS!
Thanks for suggestions though.
Yes, I thought about the Railway Children and Black Beauty, but isn't BB a bit scary in places - isn't there a fire in a stable somewhere? He has a really well developed sense of empathy and loves animals, and that would definitely freak him out. He loves the Jungle Book but we haven't got it on DVD. We don't have telly so won't be able to see Railway Children if it on TV, I'll have to get a DVD.
I don't know a Little Princess, what's it about?

Great excitement, have just been on Amazon, and have found another great old favourite has been released on DVD - Danny Champion of the World with Jeremy Irons (1989). My Christmas is now complete!

A Little Princess is another Frances Hodgson Burnett novel, filmed in a similar vein to The Secret Garden.

Fairy Tale - a true story is very good.

Fairy Tale? Who is in it, when was it made? Don't know it at all... I always like true stories.

The BBC version of Moondial is a very classy adaptation. It's out on DVD now.

I liked Fairytale (link to IMDB for cast details) but not sure it's suitable for a 3.5 year old as it to me seemed to be more about the investigation into if the girls actually saw anything, or if they faked it.
Trailer Clip Montage (love the music) More info about Cottingley Faries and Wikipedia entry

How about the BBC version of Chronicles of Narnia?

I liked Dragonheart though not sure it's good a 3.5 year old.

nannynick · 22/12/2009 20:36

Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - video clip of first 9mins - the witch may be scary though.

How about Tom's Midnight Garden - similar to Secret Garden, Moondial

nannynick · 22/12/2009 20:40

The Borrowers is quite good. May appeal.
1997 version, IMDB

Stuart Little (1999) - nothing like a movie with a talking cat and mouse.

5 Children and It (2004)
Hard to know what will scare and what won't. Depends so much on each individual child.

I keep thinking of movies... wonder if there are any more. Are you wanting old one's, or are these new one's in a suitably similar style?

Box of Delights (BBC 1984 version) - a video sample
