It was set in Liverpool and starred Con O'Neill and was about a couple going out separately on their Stag and Hen nights. It was so funny and completely brilliant. I watched this so many times when I was younger. Just wondered if anyone else remembered it.

I remember it and DW has the soundtrack CD!

Yes! Based on a play called Stags and Hens I think. Willy Russell maybe?
Very funny and very of its time.
Am I right in remembering the bride-to-be jumping into the back of a van and disappearing into the night with her new fella at the end?

SimonHowl · 26/10/2009 16:19

BiteOfFun · 26/10/2009 16:20

violethill is right baout willy russell's stags and hens too.

It is brilliant isn't it? Not even available on DVD though. I have just bid for it on EBay on VHS.

Yes she jumps in the back of the van and escapes grim Liverpool for the lights of London with the delicious Con O'Neill.

Every actor in it was just brilliant and perfect for their parts I found.

It was wonderful, and remains one of my favourite films of all time!

Loved it, and bought the book of Wille R plays afterwards.....

Some of those films, like Educating Rita are absolute classics.

(we used to watch one every Saturday night, whilst getting suited and booted (and pissed) for our night out....halcyon days of studenthood.....)

You can watch it on YouTube in 10 minute slots.

oh! i loved that film and always found it quite sad... even though she goes off with lovely Con O' Neill in the end... saw him in blood brothers a number of times!!! loved that too!

I've even got the soundtrack album somewhere signed by Con o' Neil... waited by the stage door to get it!!!!

Yes, it was very good. It's not the sort of thing that I would usually watch on TV but I got sucked in. The groom's (gay?) friend was a pretty scary, wasn't he? Con O'Neil is one of those men who are not particularly good-looking but are very attractive, lots of latent sensuality.

choufleur · 28/10/2009 19:34

ah used to love it.

pissovski · 23/01/2010 21:12

i love it!

Love Con O' Neill [be still my beating heart] and the songs and the fact that i could recognise Liverpool city centre (my nearest big city and where i had gone shopping since toddler dom)- wouldn't recognise it as Liverpool now tho!!

Thought Mark Womack was ace as the very scary dude

Have it on dvd from ebid (i think) and its still fab!!

Love it but haven't seen it for years, really do need to take dcs to see Blood Brothers!

strawberrycalpol · 28/01/2010 12:50

I love it and sourced it on video a few years ago, will now try and get DVD.

I remember by best friend being v underwhelmed and sorry for the prospective groom - Dave? Also DH who is a film buff watched it after I went on and on and was distinctly underwhelmed. Maybe it's one of those films you have to have seen when young and then repeat viewings always tinged with how you felt the first time. (Sorry, probably makes no sense at all)

Love this film. Just found it amongst our dvd’s during a clearout. Watching it again for the first time in years. I’m from Liverpool and this came out just as we moved south so it holds real nostalgia. Just recognised the brilliant Stephen Graham as the football kid early on in the film. Willy Russell in amazing as always

Absolutely loved this as a pre teen. My mum and dad has it taped on vhs and I used to watch it on repeat. The bit where she’s saying goodbye to her fiancé and he’s really drunk, and doesn’t know that she’s saying goodbye - so sad and so good. It’s so brilliant how it starts with her happy with her mates and her life in Liverpool and excited to be getting married...but then as she bumps into Con O’Neil again and is watching him on stage, she realises that isn’t the life she actually wants.

I can still remember the songs!

I once knew a girl
And she used to say
She would give me
The world one day
Then she kissed me
And turned away
And left me dancing thru the dark
