  • which we both adored

We rarely get a bit of 1-to-1 time (3yo DD2 gets easily bored by movies) but will have a morning together on Mon before she goes back to school - what shall I get?

She's (we're) not keen on animations, loves musicals - past favourites include Wizard of Oz, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Annie, and more recently the Secret of Moonacre ...

5 year olds watching HSM

islandofsodor · 19/04/2009 12:00

What on earth is wrong with 5 year olds watching HSM? Now Grease I would be at.

HSM is a clen cut film about friendship and not changing to fit in with cliques. It takes 2 and three quarter films for the two lead characters to even kiss.

The music is a little cheesy but is basically well composed with great harmonies, fantastic dance routines and it is encouraging kids to get involved in the performing arts and actually go to the theatre.

The plot line to the third film is very flimsy and I don't actually like all the fantasy sequences but it is great fun.

The Ice Princess

The Princess Diaries I and II

HSM is very tame

yappybluedog · 19/04/2009 12:47

but I wouldn't let my dd watch Hairspray, or Grease or even Mama Mia for that matter

bedknobs & broomsticks?

franch · 19/04/2009 13:48

ramona have you seen HSM? It's sooo innocent

Hairspray actually paved the way for an interesting conversation with my then 6 year old about race and why people used to treat people differently.

The odd bits of very slight innuendo, mostly in I Can Hear the Bells and and the Corny Collins girl who takes leave of absence for 9 months went straight over dd's head.

I've not seen Mamma Mia but would have more reservations about that one as the entire plot is based around someone not knowing who her father is from what I have heard.

ramonaquimby · 19/04/2009 17:33

I have seen it and is fairly innocent but the kids are still in highschool (far removed from being 5 years old) there are so many other movies for 5 year olds, what are they going to be watching when they are 8 or 10? that's what's wrong with it. kids grow up too fast these days as it is, I don't need to be helping my kids go any faster.

islandofsodor · 19/04/2009 21:48

By the age of 10-11 kids have outgrown High School Musical on the whole. It is the singing and dancing that appeals, rather than the age of the cast.

Hulababy · 19/04/2009 21:54

HSM may be about high school but it is definitely aimed at ayounger audience. DD and al her friends have seen it and they were 4/5 at the time. It is one of the most innocent modern non-animation films ever surely. They dont even kiss until end of second movie! It is just a singing and dancing fest, how many 5y don;t like that?

Most 10y really would have moved away from HSM IME.

Hulababy · 19/04/2009 21:55

islandofsodor - DD also enjoyed Hairspray and, as you say, it led to an interesting (in a good way) converstaion afterwards between us.

islandofsodor · 19/04/2009 22:00

We are hoping to go to London to see it in the Summer if we can afford it. Howver I have heard the stage show is not as good.

islandofsodor · 19/04/2009 22:01

When you think about it, HSM is more innocent than animated films such as Shrek Aladdin etc.

Hulababy · 19/04/2009 22:11

Definitely. Things like Shrek have "oder" jokes in them aimed at the grown ups watching, HSM is purely for kids - unless, like some on another thread, you fancy watching a sweaty Zac Efron on the basketball courts

Hulababy · 19/04/2009 22:11

oder should say older

islandofsodor · 19/04/2009 22:14

Or my dh who particularly liked I Want It All with the pink thigh boots in HSM 3.

bruffin · 26/04/2009 19:39

The 11 yr olds I know (inc my DD) certainly haven't outgrown HSM! Although Camp Rock is the current favorite.
The show of Hairspray is far better than the film, although I saw the show first before I saw the current film so I may be biased, but they missed one of the best songs out of the film. I saw the original Rikki Lake versions a long time ago, but it doesn't have the songs in it.
