I need some suggestions. I love to watch foreign language films, any genre and would appreciate some ideas on what to get next.

Films I've enjoyed recently are...
Amelie
L'Argent de Poche
Brotherhood
Nightwatch
My Life as A Dog
Goodbye Lenin
Downfall
Das Boot
Etre et Avoir
Jean De Florette and Manon des Sources.

And Au Revoir Les Enfants.

La Vita è bella? Wonderful film.

Chaotica · 28/03/2009 15:24

Black Cat White Cat
Time of the Gypsies
(both by Emir Kuristica who is generally good - 1st one is a comedy, 2nd definitely isn't...)

Ah, I was going to suggest Au Revoir Les Enfants. Made me weep and weep.

Some Spanish films - do you like Pedro Almodóvar? He's not to everyone's taste, but IMO his best films are:
Todo sobre mi madre
Hable con ella
Volver

Then you've got Amenábar who made a FANTASTIC film called Mar Adentro - about a paralysed man who wants to commit suicide and finally persuades enough people to help him. Sounds awful but it's poignant and moving and about love and families.

Au Revoir made me howl too, though almost everything does. Poor Jean.

Have you seen any Jacques Audiard films TD? A Self-Made Hero, The Beat That My Heart Skipped and - my favourite - Read My Lips (unusual noir thriller).

Also Kieslowski, anything by Kieslowski but especially the Three Colours Trilogy.

Molesworth · 28/03/2009 15:38

I also love Agnes Jaoui's films (eg Look At Me and The Taste of Others)

meltedmarsbars · 28/03/2009 15:44

Thunderduck 0 I loved "my life as a dog" - i thought no-one else had ever heard of it!

Molesworth · 28/03/2009 15:46

oh and the Dardennes brothers (L'Enfant, Le Fils)

and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was impressive too

mosschops30 · 28/03/2009 15:53

Another vote for the Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Au revoir Les enfants is a fantastic film, I remember going to see it when it came out ( must be in the 80s) and there was not a dry eye in the house.

There was an excellent French-Canadian film in about 1995 or so called Jesus of Montreal which is just superb.

Molesworth · 28/03/2009 15:56

has Cinema Paradiso been mentioned yet?

If you liked Amelie then you'll probably enjoy Jeunet's other films (A Very Long Engagement, Delicatessen etc)

donnie · 28/03/2009 15:57

Have just remembered Un Coeur en hiver - also excellent.

Thunderduck · 28/03/2009 21:48

Thankyou all. All of these suggestions sound wonderful, and I'll try to get all of them over time.

The Lives of Others is an achingly wonderful film. Can the love between artists survive the pressures of living in a police state? How does being one of the police spies corrupt you? I've never met anyone who doesn't love it after watching it.

And I adore Leolo, a French Canadian film about a boy who writes beautifully in his journal while living in a very messed up family. Hilarious, sad, but quite dark in places.

I don't normally gush . . .

Cinema Paradiso and Il Postino (same director)

Salaam Bombay

The White Balloon

expatinscotland · 28/03/2009 23:24

Monsoon Wedding

RaggedRobin · 29/03/2009 21:35

one of my favourite films is the swedish film tilsammans ("together") about life on a commune. it's really uplifting.

LittleWhiteWolf · 09/06/2009 20:34

I would add the City of Lost Children and El Orfanato (or The Orphanage) if you want to be creeped out of your mind!

If you're not adverse to a bit of Manga, I would also add Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
