Any opinions as to which an 8ys ds and 9yr dd will prefer between Bolt and Hotel for Dogs?

oooh and a 4 yr old too!!!! lol
ds1 wants to see hotel for dogs, but am wondering whether I should persuade him to go for bolt instead?

will watch with interest

PerArduaAdNauseum · 16/02/2009 21:04

Went to see Bolt with a 4, 5 and 6 yo today. Enjoyed it myself, but even the nearly 7yo needed a lot explaining re the pretend superpowers thing. HFD looks like a simpler plot - get Bolt on DVD when it's good and cheap

LoveMyLapTop · 16/02/2009 21:06

Someone said only see Hotel for Dogs if you like ths sound of dogs barking continually.
I am going for Bolt myself

MrsBoo · 16/02/2009 21:08

Hotel for Dogs didn't get fantastic reviews, although both my DC like the look of it - My DS (9) says he wont even consider going to see Bolt

LGoodLife · 16/02/2009 21:12

So looks like it will b bolt then! 2 hours barking dogs would send me barking 2.

By boys (4 and 7) absolutely loved Bolt. I quite liked it too.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 17/02/2009 16:43

I liked Bolt. My 7yo (nearly 8) DD loved it, she understood the plot OK.

Though I was very annoyed by the very annoying woman sat 4 seats away who gave a non-stop running commentary/explanation to her toddler DD. AT THE TOP OF HER VOICE FFS! I've no problem with unsettled kids in a kids film and no problem with parents' whispering to their kids but this woman had no volume control.

Sorry think I needed to rant. Feel betetr now!

Dh and I are taking DS (5.5) to see Bolt tomorrow. The Cars 2 3D trailer is shown before it which is the reason we are trying cinema out on a kid who still needs a night light. Big Mater may be helpful

DS1 went to see Bolt with some friends as a birthday treat over the weekend, and they loved it (there was no way I was sitting through Hotel For Dogs) It was funny, even in 2D.

moodlumthehoodlum · 17/02/2009 18:32

Hotel for Dogs? Don't waste your money...

Its dreadful. and its a tiny bit too scary to have a U certificate IMHO.

I have just wasted £30 (yes £30) on taking dd and ds to see it.

mooseloose · 17/02/2009 18:45

This is my dilema! I prefer a 'real' film as opposed to cartoon. i thought Hotel for dogs looked good!
We went to see beverley Hills Chihuahua and loved that!

Have just come back from Bolt with dd age 6, ds age 9.5 and ds's friend age 10. They all loved Bolt.
Some bits (especially the hamster) were laugh out loud funny.

We saw lots of children age 7, 8 and 9 from school there, so seems right for this age group.

When I was trying to decide between Bolt and Hotel for Dogs it seemed that Hotel for Dogs was geared at slightly younger children? (It is U rated as opposed to PG for Bolt, too?)
So for your dc age 8 and 9, Bolt, Bolt Bolt!

mooseloose · 17/02/2009 19:09

Is it better in 3d or ordinary?
Think you can do Orange Wednesday on 3d?

KingCanuteIAm · 17/02/2009 19:12

My 4yo comment after Hotel for Dogs? "Mum, they kept on saving the dogs again and again" in a voice.

Bolt, every day of the week ITO of my lot! (My older dc liked hotel for dogs but they found it unsettling because to way the film is shot is very difficult to watch).

retiredgoth2 · 17/02/2009 19:28

....seen both. My urchins are aged between 11 and 7.

I liked Bolt much, much more. In fact I was quite entertained by it. Hotel for Dogs? Well the title tells all. I felt my neurons withering individually with each passing second.

....the urchins liked both equally. So on that basis, save a few of your braincells and see Bolt....

notnowbernard · 17/02/2009 19:36

DD1 (5.3) loved Bolt

She needed a bit of an explanation along the way re the plot but did get it, I think

TsarChasm · 17/02/2009 21:24

Ah I just came on to ask this question. Grandparents want to take the gang to the cinema.

My dad will appreciate your thoughts retiredgoth. He finds these holiday films utterly awful, though he tries hard to go along with them every time.

I just couldn't make him go to Hotel For Dogs - he hates dogs

Hulababy · 17/02/2009 21:29

DH and I took DD and her friend (both 6y) to see Bolt 3D today and they enjoyed it. Think DD's friend found one or two bits a bit alarming, but not scary. DD loved it and laughed out a lot, and didn't need the storyline or idea explaining. Both DH and myself enjoyed it.

LGoodLife · 17/02/2009 22:03

Saw Bolt, took 7 kids, all loved it including me! Ate too many sweets, went for a burger after and now house is quiet.

dd saw Bolt today, she liked it.
she now wants to see Hotel for Dogs. dh has volunteered me for this, cheers dh!!!!
I need a way out.... I really don't like the sound of it.... argh..

LGoodLife · 17/02/2009 22:36

Can only cope with one kids cinema visit per annum!!!

OP posts:
Ronaldinhio · 17/02/2009 22:36

my dd1 loves bolt and she was 2 on friday
she says bad boys at everyone not an animal or the little girl
and ah, sad or bless him about bolt

so I'm not sure she gets it but she loves it and we've watched it 9 times now

glucose · 17/02/2009 22:52

saw HFD with dd4 on sunday. It was great in a really cheesy preteen way, I liked it at 35 & would have liked it at 8-9 Will probably see Bolt this weekend.
