It's been out for several weeks in Oz, but I see from "The Guardian" that it's just been released UK side. Go and see it. It's properly cinematic in its photography despite the feel-good/Channel 4 vibes which publicise it - not a tv film shown in cinemas.

Stay for the credits at the end.
Great soundtrack.

Lovely, lovely film; its heart in the right place but with stuff that has you heart-stopped with tension.

Is it only a percentage that is subtitled?

unfitmother · 24/02/2009 20:01

.

SlartyBartFast · 24/02/2009 22:16

you honestly don't notice the subtitles, i am pretty sure there werent that many. the film was sooo good and kept you in your seat that you didnt notice whether you were hearing or reading

unfitmother · 25/02/2009 10:08

I would - I'm deaf!
I was hoping it would be all subtitled, guess I'll just have to wait for the DVD then!

supergluebum · 27/02/2009 16:58

What puts me off going to see this film is the fact that the squalor depicted is the exact squalor that the children live in and have returned to since making the filmakers loads of cash. Am I totally wrong? I just have an uneasy feeling about it all. Tell me if I'm totally wrong and should go and see it?

ChopsTheDuck · 27/02/2009 17:00

supergluebum - the children were given cash to buy housing, btut ehir parents have chosen to spend it on their education instead.

They will probably go on to make more money too. Also, see the other thread running about Dhavari it's not all what the film depicts.

ChopsTheDuck · 27/02/2009 17:01

unfitmum, most cinemas seem to offer subtitled screenings round here, isn't there anything where you are?

unfitmother · 27/02/2009 17:06

Yes, but they're usually at bizzare random times and as we both work FT we've never managed to go.
DVDs are great as most have the option of subtitles.
Re. the children, I've just read that the Mumbai government have given them both a flat.

pointydog · 27/02/2009 17:19

gluebum - go and see it. Yes, the film was made by film-makers and that is their business. But teh film is also an excellent, shocking and beautiful example of awareness-raising. You couldn't pay for that sort of campaign.

supergluebum · 27/02/2009 17:20

Ok! you've sold me!

browntrout · 04/03/2009 12:12

i thought it was quite harrowing in places. The stuff with the children made me very upset. However, I was a bit disappointed with the end. I know he had to win for the 'feel good' moniker but the pursuit of money (riches beyond dreams rather than money to survive) and having that as the dream was the downfall for his brother and brought their closeness to an end. I sort of wanted him to know the answer to the last question but deliberately not give it. i realise how ridiculous and middle class that sounds (the poor really are much happier you know etc!). Oh I dont know. I didnt like it as much as I had expected. quite liked the quiz host though and the girl was astonishingly beautiful.

lilymolly · 04/03/2009 12:21

I personally could not see what all the fuss was about
Yes it was good, but did not warrant all the "feelgood" hype and "best film ever" blah blah blah.......from the critic.

Twas ok

but maybe I am hard to please?

orangehead · 21/03/2009 10:15

I finally went to see it last night and thought it was brilliant and very moving but not a feel good factor film. I cried most of the way through, even the end scene although that was partly tears of happiness.
Browntrout - I know what you mean, but I got the feeling he didnt care about the money, he only went on as he knew she would be watching. When he knew he didnt know he didnt seem to care.
Btw the the spoon incident I think was to pour acid, remember the brother knocked the spoon guy and when you see him later he has burns on his face.

BitOfFun · 21/03/2009 10:21

My dd(12) is dying to see this, but I watched it last night, and I think I'll have to disappoint her- I think it's way too traumatic...totally misleading advertising!

merlin · 30/03/2009 14:18

Saw this last night and LOVED IT! Yes, upsetting scenes with the children but also balanced by some comic moments too. Thought the soundtrack was fab! Very cleverly done explaining why he knew each answer - BRILLIANT!!

kidcreoleandthehotcrossbuns · 30/03/2009 14:22

I've finally seen this film - admittedly it was on DVD but even so, I thought it was very disappointing. Didn't seem to know what sort of film it was, and failed to be anything. It was engaging enough but I thought it was shallow and found it rather too long as it was so predictable. Certainly not remotely 'feel good'. Didn't get the hype at all.

Deadworm · 14/10/2009 10:27

It was a strange combination wasn't it. Bollywood social realism. I quite enjoyed it but not hugely. It seems better than the book.

morningpaper · 14/10/2009 11:12

It felt a bit like those "Don't hit me Daddy!" books TBH

Not convinced that you can Disneyfy the slums and make everything ok
