Rose of Nevada - scary??

I've seen a few excellent reviews of Rose of Nevada, a new film set in Cornwall - the trailer looks beautiful but somewhat terrifying!

I'm not great with horror films but this one looks like it's more of an arty one, and not too scary? Has anyone seen it?

I haven't actually watched Rose of Nevada myself yet, but judging by the reviews and the trailer, I get the sense that it’s less of a classic horror film and more of an atmospheric, "hypnotic" drama with mystical elements.
From what people are saying, it focuses more on a sense of unease—of time and place—than on outright scares or jump scares; it has a slow-burn, "hazy-arthouse" vibe backed by very strong visuals.
If you typically aren't a fan of horror movies, but you enjoy films with a distinct mood and a beautiful yet slightly unsettling atmosphere, then this one might fall right into that category.

No - it’s not at all scary in the ‘cover your eyes and run out of the cinema’ sense. Not at all. It’s mostly gentle and reflective.

I saw it yesterday. What I loved was that it flattered the audience’s intelligence. And offered a wholly different cinematic experience to anything I’ve seen in years. Visual narrative, cinematography, dialogue - each brings something new to concentrate on and wonder about.

It’s the absolute antithesis of ‘Hollywood’, not just in the facts of its independent British production, but in what it shows a film can be.

I loved it. Highly recommend.

Bait is good by the same director. Wasn’t that keen on Enys Men, though.

Agree Bait was excellent, hope to see this film.

We saw it at the weekend, it wasn't scary but I did feel a faint undertone of menace.
I found it gripping, which surprised me a bit as it was definitely arty.

MsAlignment · 07/05/2026 18:19

Ah, I didn’t feel menace exactly - more the hopeless inevitability of what had to happen.

Have you managed to see it, @Xiaoxiong?
