Movies that feel like a "fever dream" but actually have a plot

I’m looking for something that feels completely surreal or trippy while you're watching it, but everything actually makes sense by the end. I love that "what am I even looking at" feeling, as long as it isn't just weird for the sake of being weird.

Do you have any favorites that are visually wild or have a really dark, sarcastic sense of humor? I’ve already seen stuff like The Menu and Parasite, so I’m looking for something a bit more under the radar if possible.

Good luck, have fun, don’t die. Not even sure it pulled together at the end. Most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen.

The Machinist - not exactly under the radar, but pretty old now so possibly you haven’t seen it for a while?

The Cell (2000)

Butterchunks · 04/04/2026 11:57

I've just watched "If I had legs I'd kick you", bizarre but compelling- I keep thinking about it days later. Also agree with "Synecdoche, New York" suggestion

Lomonald · 04/04/2026 12:04

Banshees in Inershilin (sp) might suit you it is an absolute riot of a film, I loved it it is funny till it isn't but it is so good.

It’s a while since I saw it but Triangle of Sadness was a bit like this. I enjoyed it.

SaffyWall · 10/04/2026 08:53

I felt like this about Memento, and Mulholland Drive.

shortsaint · 10/04/2026 22:42

I’ll also say Triangle of Sadness or The Square (both directed by Ruben Ostlund.

Ari Aster films - Midsommar?

I’d generally go for European films - try on Mubi?

shortsaint · 10/04/2026 22:44

I’d also try The Drama which is out now.

Scampiniknak · 10/04/2026 22:46
