The Bride!

Saw this today in a cinema with about 12 other people - not a great turnout for opening weekend. I quite liked it overall. I enjoyed what it had to say about consent, rage, invisibility, patriarchy in general. Jessie Buckley plays both Mary Shelley and The Bride and she's FANTASTIC (as always). And it's always great to see Penelope Cruz and Annette Bening

But it's too long, too uneven, a bit all over the place. Overall, I would say it's worth a look if you're interested, but don't rush out

Ah thanks for posting. I've read some less than favourable reviews, but do love Jessie Buckley, so...

I absolutely loved it but I’m easy to please. Love her acting style.

Ah, I’d almost forgotten I’m seeing this today!

Came to say the wondrous Ms Buckley is the castaway on Desert Island Discs (BBC Radio 4 / BBC Sounds) at 10.am this morning. (I’ll just have time to listen before I leave for a leisurely walk to the cinema.)

Enjoyed it!

Nothing deep and meaningful, but an entertaining romp. They managed to make every single person in the crowd scenes - particularly the women - individually interesting, which gave it some depth as one wanted to know each of their stories.

Is it wrong that I much preferred Jessie Buckley in this to her performance in Hamnet? In a way this was surely much harder as the tone could easily have slipped into slapstick, but the acting and direction held it together. And she was beautiful in both personas.

I’ve adored Annette Bening since ‘The Grifters’ so it was good to see her in this. And Penelope Cruz didn’t annoy me, so that’s a win. The men did men stuff; Jake Gyllenhall was excellent in his small but central role.

Well done to Maggie Gyllenhall - this was a very different take on female agency to ‘The Lost Daughter’, and I’d definitely call it a success.
