You’ve Got Mail question

At the beginning of the film Kathleen arrives at work and while she’s talking she fills a glass jar with some white paper things from her cotton bag. What are they? I’ve always assumed mints, but would they have mints on the counter in a book shop in USA?

Yeah that’s not unheard of…

She does have lollies in another jar.

I wish you would have posted a picture. Were they wrapped, as mints might be?

Yes, like I said , they were white paper.

In You've Got Mail, there’s a small, quiet moment where Kathleen Kelly fills a glass jar with small white paper slips.
Those little white pieces of paper are butterfly-shaped cutouts. She keeps them in a jar in her apartment as a sentimental, decorative touch. The butterflies symbolize:

  • Her childlike, whimsical personality
  • The magic and innocence she associates with stories and her bookstore
  • A sense of hope and transformation (a subtle metaphor for her own life changes)
It’s one of those subtle Nora Ephron details that visually reinforces who Kathleen is — romantic, nostalgic, and quietly imaginative. If you'd like, I can also explain the deeper symbolism of butterflies in the film’s themes.

Thanks, but the jar is at work.

Fine! I’ll watch it again and take a look.

Chat gpt doesn’t half talk rubbish. It’s like nonsensical word salad with potentially small pieces of truth in.
