Anyone planning to see this? From the trailer I was expecting it to be marmite and not in any way a straight adaptation of the novel, but the reviews I've seen so far are universally uncomplimentary. I'd already booked to see it, so will go in with an open mind!

I really enjoyed it but I thought some of the casting was off as many reviews have said. I don’t think adaptations need to be slavishly accurate to the original text but Margot Robbie just didn’t work for me. She was stropping around and petulant like a teenager but was a fully grown woman and she didn’t carry it off at all. The younger actors were great. The sets and costumes were amazing and I thought Martin Clunes was stand-out fantastic, he managed to be comical and completely menacing at the same time. Glad I went.

One of my favourite books so no won’t be going to see it. Sounds like a historic version of 50 shades of grey.

Butteredtoast55 · 16/02/2026 18:11

@redpickle my friend went to see it and hated it but said Martin Clunes acted everyone else off the screen and was the only good thing about it 🙂

I loved it. I’ve only recently read the book and have to say I didn’t overly enjoy it, after the second half especially, but I appreciate its importance and what Brontë achieved at the time.

I love Emerald Fennel, it feels like a modern and playful interpretation, it’s not trying to replace the original or be a literal adaptation. I thought she really cleverly managed to portray the essence of the characters, the themes are different, this one obviously isn’t delving into the inheritance of trauma given the focus on one generation, but it felt like an artist wanting to explore what Heathcliff and Cathy‘s relationship could have been in the interim with the outcome ultimately, potentially, being the same, almost like fan fiction. I love that the characters got to discover and resolve the conversation Heathcliff overheard.

I thought it was harmless fun that complements the impact and world of WH rather than trying to be it. It was also beautiful with a wonderful soundtrack.

I agree. Saw it this afternoon and loved the quirkiness and the drama. Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie had such great chemistry. I suspended 'fidelity to the book' and threw myself into the story and loved it. Totally swept away into the bleak Yorkshire hills and the romance of a great story.

It's not even that. It's been billed as raunchy, but it's not really.

I thought it was! The BDSM scene was incredible. A lot of tension there.

I agree Martin Clunes was excellent. I’d never rated him as an actor before; think he’s one of these people who usually gets shunted into an annoying stereotype.

aliceinawonderland · 16/02/2026 19:26

I’ve only seen the trailer, but is that jagged rock meant to be Penistone crag? It’s straight out of Disney!

It’s a story of obsession rather than love. If Cathy posted about H on MN, she’d be told to LTB.

Spot on!

He was impressive in Manhunt. I was surprised at his casting back then

I’ve just watched Saltburn after seeing WH.
Really enjoyed it. Reminded me of The Talented Mr Ripley.

Blimey, damning with faint praise if MC is cited as the reason to go to see it!

The soundtrack is amazing. Really adds to the film.

There's a 1978 BBC serial on iPlayer at the moment which is very faithful to the book in all its savagery and fully covers the second half with Catherine Linton and Hareton Earnshaw. Also a recent interview with Kay Adshead (who played Cathy) talking about the filming.

Thanks for this. I probably saw it at the time. Will take a look.

The music is fab.

Went to see it last night.
I loved it!
It was an extremely stylised interpretation of the book but I do tend to like that kind of thing!
The costumes, the set design, the soundtrack…all completely OTT but stunning nonetheless.
I was a little disappointed that the quote from H to C, “I AM you” didn’t feature in the film. ( I hope I’ve got that right!)
My boyfriend at the time (over 30 years ago!) bought me a copy and inscribed it with another quote from the book along the lines of us (like C and H) being a rock.
🤣🤣

staringatthesun · 17/02/2026 08:48

I saw it last night. I really enjoyed the cinematography and the soundtrack. I really like Margot Robbie, but just couldn't buy her as Cathy. Agree with PP, Martin Clunes was brilliant. My least favorite Emerald Fennel film so far.

It's one of my favourite books too and i absolutely loved this film.
It's a shame to avoid it just because you have formed an opinion on hearsay .
It is not true to the book ,it's certainly quirky and surreal in parts but it's quite beautiful too, and despite Robbie and Elordi being a bit 'flavour of the month' at the moment and questioning their abilities i was very impressed with their acting, in fact i thought all of the cast were excellent.
Take a chance and go see it you may love it too.

Yes he was magnificent as Heathcliff… passion was conveyed in his very expression.

I think he was a totally over rated actor ,very wooden ,the same style in 'Rebecca' too.
But watching that film as a child made me fall in love with Wuthering Heights.

My 75 year old DM and friends were due to go on Friday. I expressed suprise that it was their cup of tea and said vaguely I thought there was a lot of sex in it. They have since read up on it and cancelled their tickets! They were expecting a fairly faithful BBC style adaptation 😂

Ha ha, I made this mistake when I went with my mum to see The Favourite. She did not like it.

BeastAngelMadwoman · 17/02/2026 23:14

I saw it today. I went in with a very open mind and treated it as separate from the book but I still thought it was pretty awful. Stunning costumes and sets so a real feast for the eyes in that sense. But I found it very self indulgent and try hard, and the bdsm and some of the overtly sexual elements felt very shoehorned in.

Midnightstar76 · 18/02/2026 16:07

Just seen it and loved it

KevinsSignatureShortdeads · 18/02/2026 16:25

Emerald Fennell appeared on the Ask Penguin podcast and discussed all the reasoning behind her deviations from the text and it all seemed quite reasonable.

I loved Saltburn and Promising Young Woman, so I’m looking forward to watching WH later on today.
