I saw H is for Hawk last week. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen a human being more resemble a young and nervy hawk than Riz Ahmed in this film based on (rather than a strict adaptation of) Hamlet.

I thought I’d find it tolerable. In fact I was edge of my seat immersed - and completely forgot the existence of the chocolate chip cookies in my pocket. It’s beautifully done. The casting is immaculate; the score properly exciting; and the cinematography fizzy and urgent.

It’s not a Sinners level of greatness - but it felt new; I understood the characters anew. Well worth seeing.

Hamlet review – Riz Ahmed’s tortured prince drives chilling modern take through London’s streets

Timothy Spall and Art Malik co-star in Aneil Karia’s intelligent and stark retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy, set in the world of shady family business

I saw this, or rather heard an article about this on radio four. It sounds amazing. It appeals to me so much more than Hamnet.

It’s rather fortunate that the two films appear in close proximity, so we can - compare isn’t quite the right word - consider them side by side.

The Guardian review likens it to ‘Succession’ - but in mood / vibe I was much more reminded of ‘Gangs of London’ (S1) which I adored for its propulsive, choreographed violence. This Hamlet is less extreme than that, but uses music, colour, and dance to great effect to bring that atmosphere.

And Riz Ahmed is a fantastically convincing Hamlet.

There's a new Hamlet? Great! I think I've seen five versions so far.

It's taken me ages to find somewhere I can get to that's showing it because of the limited release, but I'm going on Monday.

I've seen a few interviews with Riz Ahmed and I'm really looking forward to it ☺️

Bloody love Riz Ahmed! Four Lions is one of my favourite films of all time.
Hoping to see Hamlet this weekend. Funny how Joe Alwyn is in both Hamnet and Hamlet this year!
