Hamnit Picking. Plants Out of Time & Place!

I've just seen Hamnet, which I really enjoyed.
But - it's bugging me that there was a close up of Echinacea in Agnes's garden.
A quick Google tells me that this wasn't in the UK until the 1700's so well after the period in which the film is set.
I'm finding it doubly annoying as the character is portrayed as being somewhat of a plantswoman and again Google mentions that the researchers say they paid attention to what plants would have been around at the time.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Also I'd love to hear any out of place/time objects, horticultural or otherwise, you have spotted.

Can someone remind me how they were pronouncing Agnes in the film. I was so distracted for a lot of it wondering what her name was supposed to be but can’t remember now. Also noticed the front crawl!

StrongGirlsLift · 26/01/2026 13:06

Ann-yuhs

the audiobook had the same pronunciation.

Ahh that was it thank you!!
I kept thinking is it Anya? What are they calling her???

StrongGirlsLift · 26/01/2026 13:18

It’s Agnes, with a softer pronunciation of the g sound. I learned from the book that Anne Hathaway’s father referred to her as Agnes in his will.

It stood out for me powerfully in the film and audiobook that Shakespeare himself is never named. Such an interesting aspect.

Yes, thank you for the article it was very interesting. I shall add Hamnet to my (embarrassingly long) to read list!

Gorgeous film. I don’t think front crawl was introduced to the UK until the mid 19th century, either, but let’s not be picky 😬

The swimming really annoyed me! Loved the film but don’t have Shakespeare pegged as a county level swimmer somehow.

I know there's been much appreciatuon of the film but it struck me as less Shakeapeare and spouse and more White Queen meets Shakespeare in a very romanticised way.

Nothing about the storyline was authentic and therefore I wouldn't expect authenticity to extend to the props.

It was a slow burn, I managed to keep my eyes open but suspect if I'd watched it on Netflix, scrolling MNet would have been more appealing. DD had read the book and teaches Shakespeare and appreciated it far more.

I don't think it was ever meant to be Shakespeare and spouse. AH is more significant.

I also noticed an ‘OK’ which was said by Agnes, and a lot of incongruous language/ sentiments.

also noticed the lack of attention aeons the umbilical cord/ placenta delivery.

nice to look at but lots of nonsense really!

MissisBee · 26/01/2026 18:52

Haven't seen the film and probably won't but the comments about the swimming have caught my attention - what sort of swimming stroke/style would they have done then?

StrongGirlsLift · 26/01/2026 19:31

I have a feeling I read about swimming strokes in Roger Deakin’s Waterlog, but there are a few articles about historic swimming strokes, eg https://slate.com/human-interest/2022/07/history-of-the-crawl-stroke-karen-eva-carr-shifting-currents.html

Basically, all sorts of mad strokes!

Face in the water? No, thank you!

I was staring at Shakespeares trousers with a zip in, thought they looked like a pair of jeans? The OK really annoyed me as well!

I thought that too, but it didn't spoil a completely wonderful film. Loved every minute of it - v emotional.

Why do you dislike Paul Mescal so much @AelitaQueenofMars ?
