Do teens still watch films?

Dd is 13 and her and her peers don't seem to have the attention span for watching a film at all. I wish dd could enjoy a movie night but I guess spending so much time on their mobiles, they don't find watching movies engaging and get bored. Ds who is 14 has enjoyed stranger things but prefers to watch on his own rather than on family TV.

That said, are there any actual movies your teen has enjoyed recently? Does your family do 'movie nights' or is that just not a thing anymore?

In a roundabout way, what movies could be interesting or fun and engaging to watch as a family with teenagers?

It is tricky as they get older, both to find things that they will all watch and things that one of them hasn't seen already. We've done a family film night every week since ours were in junior school. We've shown them all the old classics that we watched as kids - Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Field of Dreams, Pixels, What We Did on our Holiday, Willow, The Princess Bride, Bill and Ted, The Truman Show, The Fugitive, etc. Films with Jack Black have been popular (School of Rock, Goosebumps, The House with a Clock in it's Walls, A Big Year). We've loved Free Guy, The Adam Project, the Spider-Man films (both live action and the Multiverse ones), K-Pop Demon Hunters, Hidden Figures, The Help, the recent Agatha Christie and Knives Out films. As they have got older we have also watched historical films like The Pianist, One Life, Selma, Mississippi Burning. We also like quirky films like Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Son of Rambow and Kubo and the two Strings. We always get movie snacks so it's a bit more of an event.

Yes they do.

twilightermummy · 11/01/2026 17:37

My 14 year old watch films either. He's actually said he doesn't have the attention span. Watched Stranger Things though! It's such a shame really.

Snorlaxo · 11/01/2026 17:39

Mine did but it was tricky as they wanted to watch 15s and 18s

DS is 21 so a bit older but he and a friend went to the cinema this weekend to watch Marty Supreme. When he was a younger teen we watched things like Guardians of the Galaxy (humorous, great soundtrack), Romancing the stone, Pirates of the Caribbean is a 12 and fairly daft comedies. Then some of the Tom Cruise / Sandra Bullock / Tom Hanks films.
In the run up to this Christmas we did Sunday nights were Harry Potter. Odd choice because he never read the books. He does watch and scroll at the same time quite a bit. I think he quite likes to flop and watch a film as he plays sport most evenings. He also likes the Marvel films (on Disney+).
Agents of SHIELD series would engage mid teens. One of the spin offs is very feminist.

One of mine is an avid film watcher, the other is really not that keen, DS is ND and finds it hard to keep up. But also they like totally different genres, as do DH and I and we haven't watched a film all four of us they were about 10 O don't think, we've never really done family film nights, I don't watch that many at home
myself, I prefer the cinema. DD goes to the cinema at least once a month, either with one of us depending on genre or by herself or with friends. She likes all the Marvel, DC etc ones and horror and DH does too but comes with me to see musicals and comedies which DH doesn't like.

Mine are avid film watchers. DS2 has been to the cinema most days on his Winter break from uni.

Ds and I used to have a weekly movie night when dh worked nights. He was about 7 when we started with all the films I enjoyed as a child. We did this weekly until he was about 12. However, we have continued to watch movies as a family fairly regularly over the years. Ds is 20 now and the 3 of us watched 4 chosen films together over Christmas.

Loves the cinema too, goes with friends, gf or us and our thing is going to the see retro films (80s,90's) regularly at our local cinema.

My teens loved Forrest Gump and Titanic. We often pull them down for a movie night, some are hits and some are a miss but we still enjoy doing it!

RightOnTheEdge · 12/01/2026 00:24

Mine are 13 and 15 and they both enjoy watching films. We never have a family film night though because neither of them will watch what the other likes 🙄 so I watch a film with one or the other.

Ds13 likes Marvel, Star Wars and things like Maze Runner.

Dd15 is into war films at the moment and is watching things like Hacksaw Ridge and Saving Private Ryan. We watched Greyhound with Tom Hanks last night and she enjoyed that.

Avatar and hunger games

mumof5five · 12/01/2026 00:30

My 14 year old daughter is obsessed with Avatar recently and watches them on repeat. She would much rather watch films or series than be on her phone. She loves Hamilton. Twilight. Loads.

mamabluestar · 12/01/2026 11:32

My DS14 and DD17 enjoy watching films and will now make plans to go to the cinema together.

Although a bit reluctant to watch anything my and DH suggest

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 12/01/2026 11:42

DD (13) watched Little Women recently but normally doesn’t watch many films. She watched The Sound of Music the Christmas before last and we saw Barbie when it was on at the cinema. She does watch TV though, having recently binge-watched all of Stranger Things. DS is 15 and barely watches any TV, let alone films.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 12/01/2026 17:22

Found it much easier with my dd’s than ds at that age.
All of the 90’s 2000’s teen films were a hit were a hit with the girls.

They’ve all enjoyed Marvel and Hunger Games and DS liked lord of the rings.

The older teens will sit and watch a horror now but depends how intense it is that I watch it with them!

mum2jakie · 12/01/2026 22:21

15 year old really hasn't got the attention span to watch films

18 year old is a film fan though and we go to the cinema together about once a month which I love!

HardworkSendHelp · 12/01/2026 22:27

My 15 year old son loves a movie. We regularly pick something to watch together. My 18 year daughter not so much. I did put a movie on one night at Christmas and said we will watch ten minute and ended up watching the whole thing.

noblegiraffe · 12/01/2026 22:30

Teen DD and DS really enjoyed the Mission Impossible films, Edge of Tomorrow and Top Gun Maverick when we were on a Tom Cruise binge.

They laughed themselves silly at Zoolander at the weekend so we're going to do Dodgeball next.

Lisanne55 · 12/01/2026 22:35

Ds17 is an avid film watcher. My older ds not quite so much, but does enjoy a film from time to time. We always watched films as a family when they were younger though.

Minjou · 14/01/2026 13:22

Mine all love the cinema and go frequently. They don't tend to watch films much at home though.

FKAT · 14/01/2026 13:50

DS17 does but mainly classics - Godfather, Scorsese, Tarantino, 90s horror, thriller and gangster. He isn't that keen on going to the cinema. I think the last film he saw on the big screen was See How They Run (the Agatha Christie pastiche a couple of years ago).

DS11 is a big cinema goer and enjoys lots of stuff (musicals and drama as well as action and kids stuff)

Both kids had huge exposure to film growing up (I work in the industry) but I think by the time lockdown finished they were done with franchise movies, retro stuff and animation.

There's nothing like the BIG screen.
