I'm seeing this on Wednesday. Anyone else planning on watching it?

I'm going on New Year's Day. A friend of mine has a song on the soundtrack. I hope it's going to be huge. The reviews have been very good.

I saw this the other afternoon. The performances are excellent but I always feel it’s slightly lazy to build a film around the making of a film so I deducted marks for that. It’s definitely worth a watch around complicated relationships with a less than perfect father, made me think about some aspects of my own life.

Yeh I thought it was a bit boring at times.

I saw it today, bit disappointed with it as I was expecting more of an emotional impact, given the themes and the director's previous (superior) film. It held my interest and some of the acting (Reinsve and Skarsgård) is excellent. But I'm mystified it's been winning many awards over the past few months and is tipped to be nominated for quite a few Oscars.

I’ve just seen it.

Quite honestly I only went to pass the time and get some value from my cinema membership; domestic drama really isn’t my thing.

I was floored by it. Wept actual real tears in a thankfully not very full auditorium. Laughed joyfully. Gasped more than once. I am very afraid it will steal all the awards for acting - because that was what carried it. The faces. (As he said!) I don’t know what unexpected magic they wrought that held me captivated from the very start. That first proper scene after the introductory narration really was a stonker.

It was all beautifully filmed, of course, and I enjoyed the Chanel costuming. And the portrayal of the relationship between aunt and nephew was lovely. But it was the casting, and what the actors made of really an only just above average script. I’m gobsmacked. It’s a masterpiece.

LlynTegid · 05/01/2026 08:54

Saw it on Saturday and enjoyed it, central performances including the sister I thought was very good.

Christmaseree · 08/01/2026 17:53

I didn’t enjoy it, I didn’t get why it was good, I’ve decided to put films about films on my miss list. I did the same with films about Hollywood a few years ago.

MsAmerica · 09/01/2026 20:26

I went to see it, lured by good reviews and good ratings (including a Palme d’Or/Grand Prize), but felt it was a real let-down.

It's an earnest and intimate film, very well-acted, but even though it’s possible to feel very sympathetic for the characters’ conflicts and unhappinesses, it’s just not really captivating, and for me, it eventually became tedious. I wasn’t sure exactly how it would play out, but I didn’t much care. And the unnecessarily jiggly camera just became progressively more annoying.

It does make me wonder, though, both about what seems to be a decreasing ability of filmmakers to tell stories well, and a decreasing audience interest in stories, as people seem just as happy to watch TikTok short clips on their phones, rather than sit attentively for a two-hour well-crafted movie.

I’ve watched five films at the cinemas during the last two weeks and this was the only one I didn’t enjoy.
I think there are plenty of good films out there and people still enjoy them.

Each year I try and watch all the films in the foreign film category that are available and the ones up for other awards too and I don’t think I’ve been this disappointed before.

Britpopbaby · 10/01/2026 16:34

I saw this today and found it uninteresting and pretty tedious. I preferred The Worst Person in the World.

Kudos to you for getting out to so many movies!

What I find depressing is that in the U.S., very few of the truly good films make it into theaters anywhere except big cities.

LittleJustice · 11/01/2026 17:39

I found this really tedious to be honest I can't understand the hype about it really.

I don't need a lot to happen in a film but I do need something interesting to happen and it just seemed to go on and on.

Tocsin · 11/01/2026 18:08

I just found it so full of … everything. So much I recognised from real life. So much detail. The way he rejected his former colleague. The way someone realised they were dumped. Diva behaviour on and off stage. Also the clothes. It was a surprise to me that I loved it so much, but I really did.

Right. I think you need either a good plot, or riveting characters, or snappy dialogue. None of that here.

Jeez, I don't remember the clothes at all, except for the one costume.

If it's clothes you like, try Angels and Insects.

I read a review of this earlier that was so enthusiastic that I was thinking about going to see it tomorrow (would mean a trip to Liverpool!). And then I read a not bad, but rather less supportive review from Peter Bradshaw in the Graun. Everyone seems to agree the performances are excellent, and it sounds like the kind of thing I'd like. I dunno!

What were the other four films, @Christmaseree ?

rookiemere · 22/01/2026 21:04

Its had quite a few Oscar nominations for the performances, so possibly worth seeing on that basis.
I have subsequently seen Hamnett and I think I preferred this although not wowed by either, as it did delve into some interesting themes.

These two were more recently.

Thanks for that! 😀

More Oscar nominations that I expected, won't win best actress, will be interesting to see if it wins any of the others.

berlinbaby2025 · 23/01/2026 07:20

Apart from Stellan Skarsgård, I don’t think it’s the kind of film that deserves awards. He won the Golden Globe and I expect and hope he’ll win the Oscar.

I love Skarsgard, he’s superb and I hope he wins the Oscar.

Marty Supreme was surprisingly moving.
