I’ve watched this morning. What a lovely film. Helen Mirren, Timothy Spall and Kate Winslet who also directs. The kids in it are fabulous. Worth a watch but you will need your tissues.

I liked it to start with but as it went on I found the father utterly vile to the point where I was fast forwarding any scene with him talking and I normally like Timothy Spall. The younger sister was so unpleasant that it was then unrealistic how quickly they all made up. I wanted to like this but like a pp I'd give it 5 out of 10. Great acting from Kate W as always though.

I thought KW was uncharacteristically stiff.

I thought it was so honest and real. Not all sweet and light

Flowers999 · 31/12/2025 22:59

I balled my eyes out was such a sweet film.

It was ok. Great cast

agree with posts that this romanticises death. In reality, it’s not like this. Never once did June appear to be in agony.

timothy spall character wasn’t overly believable. They were all very posh and he was a slob

MyThreeWords · 01/01/2026 09:09

I started it, but I couldn't stick with it because the characters seemed so cliched and the setting was such a bubble of middle-class motherhood. It was like Motherland with pretensions to weightiness.

A shame, because the BRILLIANt cast made me expect something good.

Whereas I’ve seen too many people die a cancer death and thought she was very real and in pain, but trying to put on a brave face.

I watched it all the way through, and did cry at the end. I didn't find it too realistic though. I'm sure most patients in hospital don't get a private room and a nurse as caring as Nurse Angel. My DH died of cancer in 2024 (can't say 'last year' as of today) and he was fortunate to receive outpatient care from our hospice before going in for his final 48hrs. My experience of NHS hospitals - even cancer wards - were not like this depiction. I was kind of amazed how quickly they all made up and settled their years long differences too.

One of the most irritatingly self-regarding pieces of nonsense I've ever seen on the subject of 'end of life' care. The characters were twee and unrealistic, a tick box exercise fulfilling every cliche in the book; gay black nurse who's an angel of course. FFS. A fine ensemble of actors were absolutely wasted on material that insulted both them and us. This is drama for people who find Richard Curtis too edgy, written by someone who has probably been cossetted against any hard knocks and needs to experience a bit more life before they write anything again. Does the whole 'nepobaby' thing matter? Well yes it does because without his mother to drag all her mates into this execrable bit of tosh it would never have been made, the funding wouldn't have been available and it wouldn't have been bought by any platform. I'm sure Kate Winslet is hugely proud of her son but the whole thing was far too self-congratulatory for my liking. The only excuse would be if I find out he's very young. If he's over 30 then he really should know better and so should she.

I loved this movie. I bawled loads. I thought the characters and acting were great. I had to suspend my disbelief at the portrayal of the hospital - but ignore that and this is a gem. Very Mike Leigh in style. Fantastic movie. So moving.

It was a beautiful film.

I didn't understand the beef between the two sisters. The palliative care was not in the least bit realistic. I still thought it was lovely.

iwillnotstaycalm · 15/01/2026 23:31

I just finished watching this and cried like a baby. Bawled my eyes out on that ending.

That;s what i liked about the depiction of beef between the two sisters. It was basically the old grooves of decades of irritation and pissed-offness with each other playing out yet again. No explanation- no justification- just 2 women who shit each other up the wall and all the old jealousies and anger and contempt come out at a time when people are not usually their best anyway.

I liked the film- but absolutely take on board the complaints about a sanitised version of death and more particularly how people dying are treated.

And I did think that if I were about to die, if my grandchildren were strong-armed into performing a nativity for me I'd want to shoot everyone in the room.

Maddy70 · 24/01/2026 16:04

I loved it
