I'm going to say it.

I preferred For Good to Part 1.

I thought it was darker and pacier.

My friend still prefers the first film.

We really enjoyed watching it tonight, but concluded watching the two back to back that they really should have just been one film.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

I went to the double bill earlier too and I thought the second part was terrific; I'm glad Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum had more to do, the songs were great and it all looked fantastic (I was in the IMAX so I suppose it would do).

This is all with the caveat that I've never seen the stage show and didn't know the story or any of the songs, but I thoroughly enjoyed it 😀

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 21/11/2025 16:53

Watched for good this morning and loved it.
Currently rewatching the first one again
I think it shows how much they have grown up in the second one, not in school so not as naive and frivolous eg nessa having an actual job
I liked the links back to the first film and of course to the wizard of oz

NotDarkGothicMama · 21/11/2025 23:58

I liked this one better than the first film. The songs were better in the first one though!

In our showing the "For the first time, I feel wicked" line had people snorting with laughter. Definitely funny rather than romantic.

I love the musical, saw Idina Menzel twice in London and then saw it several times more in London, on tour and in New York. I love the first film and feel it’s one of the best, most faithful, musical adaptations I have ever seen. This one was still very enjoyable but, as those who have seen it will know, Act 2 of the musical is weaker than Act 1 and it shows here. The necessary additional material is, for the most part, sub par. The source material is done very well, faithfully covered to almost perfection, and the performances are generally excellent, particularly Ariana Grande!

I did enjoy Wicked For Good but feel, as I did last year, that Wicked could have been done in one long film - it would have been a masterpiece of movie musicals.

distinctpossibility · 22/11/2025 07:28

I loved it but... I think Wicked Part 1 stands as a film in its own right that I will watch again, I possibly won't bother with Part 2 (apart from this afternoon when I AM going again 😂(

I think Cynthia Erivo was much better able to show her acting skills in this one as there were fewer showstopper songs followed by chest heaving finales so I felt we got to see a more rounded side to her.

It was wonderful to see the cinema so jam-packed with teenage girls and their mums on a Friday night.

JustAn0therUsername · 22/11/2025 07:31

I’m taking my daughter to see it later. But I’m already annoyed it’s two films as I will likely never watch either of them again. In a musical situation I want the whole story in one film. But I’m sure I’ll enjoy it!

It really shouldn't have been two films.

I will come back! I’ve seen the musical multiple times in stage and I already thought it was longer than needed for all I loved it 🙈

CheeseWisely · 22/11/2025 07:56

I read somewhere that the reason they split it into two films is because the audience need a break / reset after Defying Gravity before moving on to the second act that they couldn’t work out how to provide without the interval of a theatre. Kind of makes sense.

ZenNudist · 22/11/2025 07:56

They ruin films by making them 2 partners.

Its all part of the growing financialisation of everything. In the past they would have made it into one long good film. Now profit motive rules.

I've seen the musical several times too and far prefer the first half. Which is why it's surprised me that I prefer film 2.

Actually, on reflection, I think it's because I disagree with you that part 1 is a faithful adaptation to the musical. I find it too long and padded out. Part 1's story takes ages to get going. They've made it far too popcorny. Part 1 alone is longer than the entire musical.

Thursday's double bill was only the second time I've watched part 1. Which is surprising for a fan of the musical (my friend had seen part 1 in the cinema 10 times...countless times at home) I just didn't want to be bored watching it again.

Part 2 felt like it had more grit and storyline, and moved things along. I'm considering going back to the cinema alone to rewatch part 2, as I enjoyed it that much.

So strange how we see things so differently, cool too though! I felt the second one only got going when we finally got around to some original material (I Couldn’t Be Happier) but that was around 20 minutes in. I felt the padding in the first film developed the story cohesively whereas part 2 was a bit clunkier. I also felt more should have been hinted at with the Elphaba/Fiyero relationship maybe in flashbacks as that felt out of the blue in the filmed version.

I want to go and see it on stage again now though! 🤣

Me too!

Have you read the books? As I think that's impacted my opinion. The books are much darker than the musical. I love them!

Read the books and am horrified when I see kids reading them! 🤣🤣

SocksAndTheCity · 22/11/2025 13:32

I'd love to see it as a single film - I'm going to see it again next week and I plan to watch the first one at home immediately beforehand. We had a twenty minute interval at the IMAX double bill which worked fine.

I've just booked a ticket for the single-film/as it was intended cut of Kill Bill in a couple of weeks and that sold out in under fifteen minutes, so it's not as if people won't go.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 22/11/2025 13:45

Was fab. I did love it. But the songs are better in 1 than 2. It could easily have been one film. So it’s a shame really

JustAn0therUsername · 22/11/2025 17:32

I’m back!

I did enjoy it for the most part. I thought the visuals in No Good Deed Goes Unpunished were particularly excellent and the emotion of the more dramatic part of the story was great. It was stronger it lots of ways than film one. Which is interesting as I agree with PP that act 1 of the musical on stage is the strongest.

The performances were still all excellent, the costumes gorgeous, and the CGI solid.

I wasn’t a big fan of the additional songs / extra story bits. They felt forced in to pad out the act two movie and they could have just done a 90 min film if it had to be a two parter.

I remain of the view they could have done the whole thing start to finish in about three hours rather than two films though and that would have been even stronger. As it is it’s one story that’s now really bloated by being split.

Swimmingbackwards · 22/11/2025 18:36

Overall i enjoyed it and as a spectacle it is superb to see on a big screen. I've not seen the stage show and was quite disappointed with the lack of any really good catchy songs. I feel they have really missed a trick there (both for the film and the production) it meant rather than being great it was good. The costume design deserves an Oscar- they are superb.

8misskitty8 · 22/11/2025 19:48

I loved it. Not as much as the first half. But it's the same with the stage show, I prefer the first half of that too.
Visually stunning and the fiyero/elphaba duel was steamy !

I liked the new songs especially girl in the bubble.

But CGI wise- what on earth was that Jeff goldblum scene ? Really dodgy looking.

somethingnewandexciting · 22/11/2025 21:12

I just wanted to pick brains on it and started a thread, but seeing as you have all seen it, maybe I can repost here? I feel like the Grinch after reading the glowing reviews here!

Went to see it today and feel like I was the only one who has got the hump with it? I came out of the first one feeling empowered and strong. This one I was really confused by in comparison. I haven't ever seen the play so maybe I am missing something?

  1. Why was the worst person Madam Morrible in this, when Oz was the one at fault? It became about her being the puppet master and manipulating him and everyone else?
  2. Why did both women fight each other over a man who isn't that good looking and seemed perfectly happy to marry one of them without loving her, then sleep with her best friend ON THE SAME DAY?
  3. Why did both women just accept this and Elphaba seemingly had zero qualms about bedding him and even as if she was lucky to have a slimeball who would do this to her mate?
  4. Why did the man in question not give either of them any explanation as to his behaviour with both of them at all at any point?
  5. Why were the 'ruby' slippers diamante?
JustAn0therUsername · 22/11/2025 21:20

I googled the slippers thing as I wondered too. A People interview with the costume designer says that it’s because in the original book they weren’t. That was an MGM movie thing.

AI told me MGM owns the rights.

So I guess somewhere in between that is a “we don’t have the rights to the red shoes idea but in the book they were silver so that’s fine”

I agree that fight was stupid

Dh and I saw it yesterday. Surprised by the comments here as we thought it was awful compared to the first one 😬🙈 <I’ll get my coat>

I'm with you. I remember coming out of the first one on a high and this one I was thinking "what the hell have I just watched?", like night and day!

Without wanting to derail the thread, can I ask how you found it? AFAIK it was screened once at Cannes in 2006, and then never released - I'm talking about Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair which is one (long) film, not just watching the first and second back to back (which is two films).

Regarding Wicked, I'm wondering if the people (like me) who aren't familiar with the stage show have a bit of an advantage because we're seeing it all for the first time so everything is equal - I haven't got a clue which songs are new, for example. I can imagine feeling put out if a bit I particularly liked had been messed about with.
